1930 Model A Doodlebug Update

With a little tinkering (rebuild carb, replace coil), I got it to running. Took it out to test - roughest ride ever. Would hardly stop, so brought it back in shop, adjusted let front brake just fine, went to right front and it did not want to respond, soo pulled the hub. WHAT - nothing there, and the drum has two holes rusted thru also. So, discussing it with the guys at coffee shop this morning and one of them said he had an old Model A running gear that had been converted into a wagon that I could have. Got it home and soaked everything in penetrating oil and letting set overnight. Sort of like Christmas, waiting until tomorrow to open my present to see what I got.

With Henry's model A mechanical brakes, if everything is nice and clean, you adjust them correctly they actually stop pretty darn well. Never ever try to buy them at your local car part store! You need the type of shoes used on big old crane drum winches and stuff like that. It is a woven very heavy belting with shaved bronze in it. You need to remember...back then if you were driving down 5he road at 45mph, man you were going fast. Long ago brakes were called binders. Take a look at an old 1929 bulldog Mack to see a set. They are huge. Have fun with your toy. Sounds as if you have a pretty good start. Make sure you use an air filter on that updraft carb. So many fall off and people just didn't bother to fix them.

Well, Christmas did not drop off any brake parts on that old running gear.
good drums and backing plates is all it had. I have found the brake parts already on a backing plate up in Kansas. May have it stopping before Santa shows up. It will never get any speed, so they don't have to be great, but do have to stop it when loading and unloading.

So does Snyder's in Ohio, Brattons in Maryland, Mikes Affordable in Georgia, Gaslite Auto in Ohio, Sacremento Vintage Ford in California, C W
Moss in California and Tamms in Massachusetts. These are just the ones I can think of quickly. Bunch more out there.
Model A cars and trucks shared everything but body style. Model AA were heavy trucks and sharded little with the Model A's.
