Battery prices

Had to get a battery for my pickup 2010 dodge 1500 could not believe the $225.The excuse that I was given every place new size for the battery makers so they have to retool. So let get this straight they have been making these batteries for the truck when it was new but now they have to retool.

Do you have a local Rural King or TSC ? That's about the best battery prices around here in Ohio.

Ditto that.
And depending on the store it could be either Deka, Continental, or Exide made.

All good Batteries.

Some vehicles take special battery size for clearance, post position, etc.

If you have the time to research, usually a more available battery will fit.

The battery died in my '13 Silverado. The size called for was a 78 series. Did some measuring, a 24 fit
almost exactly. The 24 series has been a standby size since the 60's.

Going with the 24 saved about $30 IIRC.

The technician at OReillys tried to tell me it would not work because the CCA was higher, the alternator
could not keep up! LOL

Takes a BCI type 94R battery (DIN type H7). Nothing unique about it. $150 at my local Walmart. They might even have one
cheaper they don't advertise. My Walmart has started stocking batteries minus the long warranty for 1/2 price.

I just had to get a new battery for my Chevy van. $110 for the Walmart with full warranty and $49 for the same battery with
just 1 year. Warranty means nothing to me and I got the $49 battery.

Bingo, JDEM.

A one year warranty is more than enough to discover initial/manufacturing defects which is all that is needed in the overwhelming majority of cases.

as Tim said. the dipsticks working the counter didn't know and were feeding you a line because they didn't want to explain their high prices. They would have NO idea if the battery people had to retool.

I'd find a different shop.

i've had good luck with ACDelco batteries as has my mechanic. just priced one for my daughters car. ACDelco economy $80 premium $100 (plus tax of course)that's at Hoffman Bros in Goshen, IN

Just bought a group 31 950 CCA from NAPA yesterday. Battery was on sale for $95, has a 18 month full replacement, 36 month pro rated. Thought that was a heck of a deal. Put it my Ford 3400 instead of the 4dlt, a little tall but sure spins the old girl nice.

Cheapest place I know of for batteries in my area of MN is L&M Fleet Supply (not to be confused with fleet farm). I have bought several 540CCA batteries for my smaller tractors there
for $49. I bought an 1100CCA battery for my bigger diesel tractor a couple weeks ago, and that was around $110. Dura-Start brand. Batteries are very expensive, have to shop around
for sure.

It's amazing people shop by price only. I use OEM batteries in everything. Usually last longer and comparable in price than the "will fit" batteries from the retailers.

Is that figuring in the cost of the adaptors? A 78 is side post and a 24 is standard top post?

The pricing on batteries never has made sense to me as batteries in the same CCA range vary widely in price,so I do what I can to modify all my tractors and vehicles to accept the
most economical ones in the correct CCA range.I've had very good service with batteries from Sam's Club, 3 year 100% replacement 7 year guarantee overall and they are priced
very reasonable.

"It's amazing people shop by price only."
Is that you Thurston Howell III?

OEM is great for most things. If you buy oem batteries, you are throwing money away imho.

Wow, I was feeling ripped off today. The wifey had to go grocery shopping and some other errands this morning. We have a 2010 impala. She made a couple of stops and then to the grocery store. Came out from there, and car wouldn't start.
There is a privately owned car repair shop at the far end of the parking lot. She walked over and told them about her problem. They sent a guy rite over and jump her car and she drove it over to their shop, and they tested battery. No Good. It was the original GM battery. They installed a new Interstate battery which cost $119.oo. Total bill including tax, $151 and change.
I guess I shouldn't complain for their prompt service and saving me a 20 mile trip in my PU to start her car. and then back home again with a new bat. from my auto supply store, and then screw around putting the new one in.

My experience...
I had bought a car brand new and the oem battery lasted 7 years and finally had a dead cell it would not start... waited 5 min and started left car running and figured where to get a battery... I ended up at the dealership the battery was 12 dollars more and had a longer warranty (I think it was 66 months) vs most were 4 or 5 years. well fast forward 11 months after having the dealership battery it had a dead cell. I brought it to the dealership and replaced it but so much for the OEM thoughts. Afterwards I was told not sure if its true that a new car gets a new battery (lead etc) a battery at the dealership can be made up recycled batteries. So looking back I am not sure I would buy or recommend a oem battery again as the warranty is sham especially after 1 year they pro rate the battery (assuming all manufactures are similar)

bought a battery at a parts store for a used car lasted roughly four years on a 5 year warranty I brought it back to the parts store they said with the pro rated amount they would give 22.50 towards a new battery (by the way if I just brought the old junk battery in I would have gotten 20 for a battery core) since I took the trade in warranty as it was slightly higher value I think I only was able to get the remainder of the original warranty applied to the new battery (1 year remaining).

had a super duty pick up with dual batteries that the truck was 7 years old when I sold it and on original motor craft dual batteries still going strong. The truck sat most winters in the cold it was lucky to be started once a month.

bought a duralast gold battery years ago for a tractor and the battery died one month out of the 5 year warranty and I could get nothing for it. so I did trade in the battery got the same battery going on 6 years and still going strong.

so my thoughts are and they are just thoughts...
if you battery dies and its convenient to try to order online and do in store pick up with the coupons offered online you might get the better battery (or its just a longer warranty battery not a better battery) then a walmart battery for roughly the same price as the walmart, you might be getting the best value for a battery but not the cheapest battery.

(quoted from post at 17:48:09 12/15/17) Wow, . They installed a new Interstate battery which cost $119.oo. Total bill including tax, $151 and change.

If it would have been a man, they would have installed it for free.

This topic reminds of when JC Penney was in the automotive business. Back then, $49 was a lot of money for a battery, but you couldn't beat the warranty!
To the people who actually DID buy one of these and kept trying to replace it, JC Penney eventually gave you your money back.

I just picked up a battery today from my local guy, US 12 Marine & Battery Man. It's a 1-year old NOS Deka 1000 CA, paid $60 for it. He had brand new ones for $119. He said Deka is the only US manufacturer
now, and only Napa batteries are made by Deka; everything else comes in from China. Dunno, didn't spend time researching it, just taking the word of a guy who's been in the business for years and always
treated me right.

I just got done putting new batteries in my 2011 Ram. Went to the Interstate store and bought two, cost $344.00, which I figured that I was gonna have to spend 350.00 anyway. Always had good luck with Interstate batteries.

I found the Sam's Club battery's reasonable and they last good.Just bought a Group4 1200 amp for my Cat dozer for $130

Plenty of other batteries made in the USA other then Deka. Johnson Controls is the largest battery maker in the USA and makes the batteries for Interstate, Walmart, and many other brand names and OEM in many new cars and trucks. If someone told you Deka is the only USA battery maker - he is either an idiot or a liar.

"only Napa batteries are made by Deka; everything else comes in from China."

Didn't research Exide, but it appears Johnson Controls (DieHard, Interstate, "AC Delco", etc.) is keeping jobs here.

"MILWAUKEE, Feb. 2, 2017 –The world’s largest automotive battery supplier and recycler, Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), is announcing investments to grow manufacturing capability in the United States. The company will accelerate $450 million USD in investment at its existing facilities across the country to increase capacity to grow its aftermarket service and supply capabilities. This amount includes an announcement today of an additional $50 million to increase capacity at 8 U.S. plants by 10 million batteries in 2017."

Wonder if your "battery guy" believes his own spiel?

The rest of the story, wonder what makes folks spread such BS???

We bought a membership to Costco last week so I could get some hearing aids, and I went and looked at their battery prices. I think we are
going to need a big deep cycle for the boat in the spring and a group 27 Interstate was about $75, that's not too bad. I have always
considered Interstate to be a premium battery. I know it's the best place to buy hearing aid batteries!

Interstate is just a rebrander and sells batteries made by Johnson Controls. Same as Napa Select, Walmart Everstart, Autozne Duralast, OEM Ford Motorcraft, OEM Honda, OEM Subaru, etc.

Deka is just a brand name like Duracell for batteries made by East Penn. NAPA is NOT the only seller. I get them at Sams Club sometimes.

The Interstate type 27 DC battery is the same as Walmart sells and both are made by Johnson Controls. I think my Walmart has them for $79 also with a 1 year warranty or $89 with two years.

I very mush doubt that. Deka doesn't only make batteries for NAPA. Add to that, I also doubt that EastPenn is the only manufacturer with US plants. Exide has atleast 2 plants manufacturing batteries in the US.

In my area most all the parts stores like Advance Auto,Auto Zone,NAPA etc will install the battery for free plus they'll check the alternator or your old battery for free.

Did I do wrong? The batteries died in my 986 IH. The ones I pulled out were MT 34's. Was going to shop around for batteries so stopped at TSC first. He only had one 34 so goes and looks it up, tractor is suppose to take 24's. His computer says he has 3, but could only find one. He had a couple of 78's sitting there. Did some measuring and decided they would fit, plus had 50 more CCA. They have side post also so if have to can put one in my diesel chev. pickup. Cost me 109 each should I cry or smile.

(quoted from post at 12:39:46 12/15/17) It's amazing people shop by price only. I use OEM batteries in everything. Usually last longer and comparable in price than the "will fit" batteries from the retailers.

Well if he had been shopping by price only he would not have been shopping by application now would he? He would have been quoted under a hundred for the cheapest thing that would fit in the spot regardless of CCA.

I told my interstate battery man yesterday the next time he stops by to replace all those cheap arse PF batteries with Mega-Trons if the customer wants cheap he can buy'em somewhere else...

The cheaper ones last just long enoufh to get out of the free replacement warranty. Folks will balk on that I would bet there cheap arse battery will fail a load test at the 18/24 month range...

I don't expect the cheap arses to understand that just hope it fires off rat now if not your cheaps arse battery is not up to the task... You are the one that's out in the cold not me...

Next time try your local dealership. Had to buy one for my taurus a while back. $126 at orileys and advance with a two year warranty. My local fod dealer sold me one for
$120 and it came with an 8 year warranty. First three are free and prorated after that.

The JC Penney auto repair and batteries were sold to Firestone. If you had one of the lifetime JC Penney batteries, Firestone would warranty them. They had to be installed in the original vehicle owned by the original owner the JC Penney battery was in to be eligible for warranty.

Just FYI Costco carries a slightly different warranty than a typical intererstate battery, but equivalent battery with same warranty at advance auto was 120 ish for a similar battery at Costco was 72

I've stopped buying batteries at Walmart simply because they give me such a hard time about honoring their warranty at the store I go to. Ex SIL worked there and tells me it's the manager causing that. Anyway, I get good service and actually better pricing at TSC these days.

You realize they're all made by the same company to comparable specs? Why would I buy a Exide manufactured Case IH battery for $200 when I can go to a truck shop and get an Exide branded battery for $90. They claim the Case IH battery is a better battery, plates are secured better in the bottom end of the battery, but honestly, I've had very good luck with the truck shop batteries.

Interstate Megatron is the exact same battery as the Walmart Maxx Everstart. Same battery made by Johnson Controls. Same
warranty (if anyone cares). $96 from Walmart and $150 from Interstate. Why would anyone buy under the Interstate brand name?

I own at the moment maybe 50 batteries? Been that way for 20 years and I have yet, ever, to have one fail under warranty.
Long warranty just doubles the price of the battery and means nothing to me. That said, I have seen plenty of people get
warranty on batteries at Walmart. The old receipt is required and they are clear about that.
