I've been packing and downsizing for my road-trip. I have a room full of books. Hardback, paperback, fiction. non-fiction, reference, cookbooks, etc.
Nobody wants them. I've called Libraries, bookstore exchanges, friends, etc.

So, now I am just packing them in my wood burner and getting some heat from them.

I hate burning books!

I saw a segment on "Texas Country Reporter" on RFD, where a person had made many mailbox like structures and put books in them for people to enjoy at no expense and return them for others. Seamed to be working when they did the segment.

Jon f mn- I am being told that almost everyone reads their books 'on-line' or using a Kindle".

Me...I like to hold the book and turn the pages...lol

That's a great idea, just hope someone doesn't come along and do something to jam up the works. Wife and I go to Mt. Crawford, VA a couple of times a year for the Green Valley Book Fair. Thousands of new books at 50%-90% off of retail price. The latest best sellers won't be there, but you can come back with a car load easy. We need to down size on books, probably got a couple of thousand in all our book cases.

Those are all over here in Minnesota now. I didn't even know about them til my grandkids pointed them out to me. There are usually several in every town around here. Looks like a bird house with glass doors. You just take what you want and put in donations. Guess they are working.

Yea, those free loan libraries are kinda neat.

I love my iPad, with me all the time, but I want to read a book from a real book.

Sometimes local charitable organizations or churches will accept used books and send them to developing countries.

Adirondack case guy- Good idea but, I don't plan on being around here long enough to build the 'mailboxes', let alone, to stock them.

P.S. Most people can't read around here.

I have shelves of books and I read as much as I can.
Have been a book addict since grammar school.

They take free books and sometimes you get store credit or money.
It would be really hard for me to start burning my books.
Getting your books there would be the problem.

I am 3/4 through President Ryan's war with China right now. I bought two more books Tuesday at the Salvation Army store in Quincy.

It would have to be life or death for me to burn books. Love to read. We may have too many books around here! Hope you can find someone to take them. I will not read books online.

We had a Preacher years ago who collected books and took them to the Parish jail and the prisoners were always glad to get them. I don't know if the younger generation of jailbirds can read or not.

Greg..........the NAZI's didn't have enny trouble burning books, especally one's by allegedly Jewish authors...... Dell

Couple miles south of me is a place called Winneshiek, it has about ten houses next to a creek that probably was dammed for a mill. It's got a box by the road that says Winneshiek library.

Check with your local school libraries. I know I asked the Libertarian at my daughters school the night they had open house, and she said they would be willing to take pretty much anything I had to give them.

That said, worst case take them and give them top Goodwill or the Kidney foundation before burning them. Just hearing that makes me sick.

I have taken quite a few to local retirement homes. The big print are especially welcome. How about some veteran homes or even the veteran's hospital.

We have a swap building at our local convenience center where folks take their used books. Find something you like take it home and read it then take it back. works well.

Most jails only allow new books shipped directly from the bookseller. Too easy to smuggle in contraband in books.

These places you suggest giving the books to... EVERYBODY gives their books to these places. They're up to their necks in books! They don't need any more %$#@ books.

What kinds of books are you burning? Paperback novels? There are 1,000,000 more copies of that book out there. I know it doesn't feel right, but you're not doing anything wrong. Start burning first edition copies of Huckleberry Finn, or bibles, then you've got a problem.

Put some in a box and wrap them in Christmas paper, put the packages in the back seat of your car and go to a shopping area and leave your car unlocked, they'll be gone in less than an hour.

Our local library takes books in donation, then has a book sale fundraiser once a year. I have donated a lot of stuff there, including Antique Power magazines. I don?t know what they do with the leftovers?

(quoted from post at 21:10:16 12/13/17) retirement homes often have an area for book sharing

PLEASE take them to a retirement home! I have found that they seriously appreciate donated items. I have taken many jigsaw puzzles (only the ones with every piece though!) and I took about 100 "Farm Collector" mags to a retirement home in a rural area that has many retired farmers. All have been welcomed and appreciated.

My wife and I try to time our trips up I-81 to coincide with the Book Fair being open. We have also spent some time at the auction they have across the parking lot.

Thanks for all the ideas/suggestion. I'll try all of them.

BTW, I can always depend on y'all to have the best ideas.

Thanks
