9N hydraulic system

I am the owner of a 47 Ford 9N that has, over the last five or so years contracted a distinct 'knock' in the hydraulic pump when I raise the lift arms by moving the quadrant lever to the up position. I have had this old girl since 1974, with very few problems. I have, in my spare parts box, an 8N hydraulic pump that looks identical to my 9N pump except for the position control valve lever. Am I better off to change out both the pump and the quadrant lever/lift cylinder casting as a pair? I have both parts and they were supposedly in good working order when they were removed.

Hate to tell you but you DO NOT have a 47 9N Ford as the 9N was not made then. The 9N was only madefrom 1939 to midway of 1942. You might have a 2N as they were made late 42 into 1947. But the control valve from an 8N will not work in a 9N or 2N. And the pump in my 1944 2N has done the knocking under heavy load for years and I see no reason to change it. I do not know if the 8N pump is interchangeable with the earlier 9N - 2N pumps or not. But forget about the knocking, it soes not hurt anything.

If changing out the pump and top cover to the 8n unit then
change it out.
I would check components for wear before installation. I would
upgrade the piston to an NAA piston.
If just changing out the pump to the 8n pump then you will need
the rod from the 8n top cover. This will give you position
control but you will lose draft control.
