My project and win

So... I bought this superM with a stuck engine at a local auction. Paid too much but I wanted one anyway. Got it home yesterday(Friday) and put it in the shop to thaw. One can always hope a bit of warmth and some working a rear wheel will pop it loose. No good, won't budge. I then wanted to look down each cylinder with my bore scope, so had to wait for today to get it from home. After a look I thought they looked almost perfect maybe cyl four piston was a bit corroded by the cylinder wall. I put some atf/acetone mix (thanks Old) in each cyl and applied air pressure to each (starting with number one) for awhile. I loosened the rocker arm shaft and made sure each valve was loose, they were. When I got to cyl four I went for more tools and across the shop I hear a rather loud POP. The engine popped loose rom the pressure on numer 4. After putting the engine back together and some points filing it came to life. Took about six hours from start of soaking to driving it out of the shop. WIN!!!

I will need to rework the hyd lines. For some reason the line comes off the pump and is tee'd going to a splitter for the power steering and also the main hydraulic under the gas tank. With the main hyd lever all the way forward there is no power steering. With it midway in the hold position, there is power steering. And all the way out the steering is some better, feels more powerful although it doesn't need it on the cement shop floor. The splitter also feeds the two way valve.

I do have a question. I assume the valve under the tank is a one way like the old belly pumps. Both of those ports get pressure at the same time??

That trick with the air hose hooked to where the spark plug goes works pretty good doesn't it. Have done it on several tractors. Latest was the neighbors Alis chalmers. When they pop loose it almost scares the daylites out of you.

Yes! When it popped, I turned just in time to see the tractor still wobbling. I figured the pressure would help force the ATF down faster. It must have worked, there was none left in there when I looked after it popped loose.

Congrats on your Win!!
Isn't it nice when you take a chance and things work out without a whole lot of money and effort. I am not always so lucky.

Nice looking tractor, don't even see any dents, hit it with the pressure washer and it'll be brand new.

An easy fix, takes the sting out of paying "too much". Congrats on a fine looking, and running, Super M!

An easy fix, makes paying "too much" easier to take. Congrats on a good looking, and running Super M.

In the original system with the remote control valve the valve pressure inlet had a tee and pressure line from pump passed through the tee and to the liftall pressure inlet. If liftall unit was used the lever on remote valve was locked back with nothing hooked to it's outlet lines so pressure would go to the liftall unit and not circulate through valve back to pump inlet. When the remote control valve was used the liftall lever was locked back so pressure didn't circulate through it. Unit and valve have little tangs below levers for locking in place. Reason they done that was the pressure relief valve in the liftall would work in both setups. No belley pump in that tractor, just a cover on bottom for implement hookup and the remote control outlet below tee is blocked.
For the priority valve to work the inlet of it needs to be the first place pressure from pump goes to. Right before remote control valve tee or between tee and hydraulic unit hooked in with tee so outlet pressure of priority valve is sent to control valve and unit under tank. Other ways to plumb also, just depends on what you want or need.

What ever a person pays for something and he is satisfied then he didn't pay to much. You can always tell how much of a boy is in a man by the toys he buys. That looks like VERY nice toy to me. Congradulation on your purchase.

Very nice looking rig- you did good! But on the downside, if you keep buying stuff that straight, you'll never use up that leftover Bondo in the cupboard in your shop.

I know the feeling of paying through the nose for something non running and it starts right up with a little tinkering. Just did it about a month ago. Great feeling. Congrats.

Hey Jon, that's a nice tractor! Wondered who got it. Have one like that over here in the shed, except it's a wide front. It's a good tractor, just have to undo all the cobbling my grandpa did to it. You know, I thought it was a big high for a non-runner, but now that you have it running, it is well worth that, it's especially straight! But wait... I thought you were a John Deere guy!?! Good luck with it!

JD Guy?? Not me, I have MF, MH, JD, IH, 9n Ford, AC if you count the Gleaners. Colorblindacres?? Don't have a Oliver unless you count the plow. My motto is "If it runs, it's used".

When I looked at this SM it had a rain cap and looked like it was barn kept. The gas in the tank smelled fresh. And the radiator was clean with antifreeze. I thought it should be an easy fix.

My Farmall M has a JD 45 loader on it. I'm looking to put one on this SM. Then I can have a bale spear at two farms.

That is one of the nicest super M's I have seen. It would be a crime to blow paint on that one!! That hyd. valve is a nice item as well. I think they were called "christmas tree" valves.
