Did not want to hack DAVE's post on curling and about as far from tractors as you can get. I kind of get intrigued over all the types of sets and collect a few old ones. This also seems to be going out with the youth today in my opinion.

jocco.

I've played chess since I was a kid. I STINK. I know the possible movements of all of the men on the board, but I've never developed any strategies. I just move the men around until my opponent get me in check mate.

I think it might be a good game if I ever learned the ins-and-outs of it.

Way back when I was in JR high I and another guy came out as chess champs. Tony Mitchell and I played something like 7 games as the 2 top players and we would stall mate them all so that is why we where both the champ of the chess club that year. Been decades since I have played and the last time I did play I could not remember the moves I had learned all those years ago

Pretty much same here, started in school not very good at it either now you can play on internet or on computer. There does seem to be better teaching methods and instruction on strategies, now days.

Love to play and thought I was pretty good till my 9 year old whipped my butt in about four moves. She said see watched how I play and picked up the moves on the internet. She plays with her brother a bunch. Fun to watch them play and actually think instead of sitting on a computer all the time.

Seems to me that 'sitting on the computer' taught her how to 'whip' her dad. That's why I like the 'Net'. Anything you want to learn, I mean ANYTHING is there.

Never had the patience to learn, but I taught my Grandson how to play checkers. Got him a board last year for Christmas, he is 6 yrs old. He kicked my butt last night in a game, lol.

Have never played a real game with a person... but I play a lot of computer chess.

I'm sure I'm still at novice level - but taught myself how to play by turning on "Tips" until I learned the moves for the various chess pieces.

Enjoy it greatly! Play a couple games every morning and every night.

When I was in high school our principal would walk the halls with a chess board under his arm. If he saw somebody goofing off or just wasting time in study hall he would challenge them to a match. Got to be kind of a thing to try to beat the principal. Looking back, that guy was smarter than we gave him credit for at the time.

once in a while. I know the rules and moves...but that's about it. I got bored at work a while back and made a chess set out of tube end scrap (I work on the saws that made the cut offs, by myself... I got bored) Trying to play ones self in ten minute sets (during break time) don't work that well.

I love playing chess. Used to play the chess game that came with Microsoft windows until Windows 10 omitted it. I found a way to restore it but every time Windows is updated it erased the chess game. It was by far the best chess game I've found on the computer.

Hi I learned to play chess in elementary school. Played a few games later and taught my kids to play, I don't think they play now or if they taught their kids.my brother was in Japan and brought me a beautiful chess set for a gift. I gave it to my youngest son. I think everyone is into the internet, emails, etcetera now. If not out making their living. Ed Will Oliver BC

Back in the 70's a friends cousin, a self proclaimed chess master (read all the books knew all the moves) played me, a rookie, many times, he won once, said my moves were not in the book!

Ha, he wouldn't have had much success finding someone in my high school to play chess ...... better he look for someone to help steal someone's cigarettes !!!

I play some with my Grand Kids. I taught my kids but none of them liked it. My Grand daughters love it. The one that started college this fall is a chess nut. LOL There will be some upper classmen with hurt feeling when they play against her in a game. She usually beats me in under 20 moves.

A little family history here. My Great Great Grand Father came here from Germany. His cloths in a sack, a hand carved wooden chess set/box, and about $50 worth of gold coins, was all he arrived with. His Father gave him his most cherished possession, the chess set, as they both knew they would never see each other again. He set foot in America in July of 1830 and moved to Iowa in 1838 in search of land to buy. He died with a farm and eight kids. His oldest son, my Great Grand Father, received the chess set. He wanted the set to go to the child in the next generation with the most interest in chess not just the oldest. He taught me to play before I know what the game actually was. Like I said none of my kids cared for the game. I asked them all if they would be alright with the one Grand Daughter getting the chess set. They agreed she had the most interest of all the kids or grand kids. When she turned 16 I gave her the set. We researched the set the best we could. We have contacts with the family still back in Germany now. They had some old dairies that talk about kids playing chess for entertainment in the evenings. One talks about a set made by the Father so the kids would no damage his "good" set. The relatives in Germany have the set they feel is the "Good" set. We are pretty sure that the set we have is the "homemade" set. This dairy was written in 1795. The set is crudely made. It is not fancy but it is priceless in my eyes. My Grand Daughter feels the same way. She does not keep it at school but has it in a fire resistant locker at home. So some old family history.

Very cool story JD. My great great grandfather was from Germany also. But the only family heirloom we have from there is a lamp that supposedly was hanging on the wall of Hitler's library. Dad came home from the war with it. I sure wish I had asked him more about his ancestors while I had the chance.

That is So Cool about the history of JD Sellers chess set,,.. and Yes , I Love chess,.,.and Chekers, i usually challenge the gran kids at the cracker barrel,..//. this yr I played "Abe Lincoln "at Lanesville Heritage Weekend ,. and we locked up the board twice consquetively .I cant recall ever doing that,? When we used to play the back seat against the front seat checker games . we had a cloth set on the console of my double cab 95 dodge cummins and we would play while driving to Florida, it was the kids against the parents ,LOL ,.That clothe set had a lot of history,. Before those road trips and before children ,.. just for fun and frolic , down at the lake , i used to play the" 1st wife to be "in strip chess, and checkers ,... That was 42 yrs ago,.the game went sorta like this ,.... she or i had a choice to give up a captured piece or a article of clothing ,,. in the latter case ,the capture would be made,,.if she chose to remove something she would keep her man and have the option to " FLY move "that captured pc anywhere safe on the board , as long as it did not endanger another man for immediate capture ,.,.It was kinda complicated rules ,and goofy ,., but we didnt care ,.. it was just fun making new rules and teasing "as we went along ,and drinking some homemade wine .. and Yes Guys , ,. You gotta let HER win ,. so play stupid ,so in the end ,although She lost some clothes ,but . She wins and is stuck with a boyfriend not wearing much. LOL

I"ve played one game of chess in my life...decades ago, with the younger brother of a girl I dated while in the Army. I won. I quit while I was ahead. Just like more recently, in Vegas, stuck a quarter in a machine, got 50 cents back. How many double their money in Vegas?

I really enjoy playing chess n play as often as I can. Biggest problem is most evenings she is just to tied after work to play. 55 years old and I still love to play. Al

I never played a game, but every time someone mentions chess I think of Blazing Saddles.

Yup, have played most of my life and used to have some good games with the kids. The missus had a chess club after school for elementary children to introduce them to the game and teach them the basics.

Taught all 3 of my kids to play. Also helped the oldest build this chess board almost 10 years ago...where does the time go?

Used to play a bit about 40 years ago but I was poor at anything requiring that much strategy. Plus always been a poor loser so obviously I drifted away from chess and feel no inclination to try it again.

Play 'The Chess Lv.100' program on Windows 10. Used to play a lot of tournaments but haven't played a real person in 10 yrs. Can't find anyone to play anymore.

I played against a retired Navy guy one summer about 50 years ago. In the beginning he could beat me easily, but he was helpful to me in planning strategy. I tried to read a chess book, but got bogged down on all the "Queen's gambit" stuff. I gradually got better, and at the end of the summer, I could beat him about half the time. Haven't played much since, although I hear my oldest grandson has taken it up- so I may have a game at Christmas.

I don't have a lot to add to all the great responses but when I was in high school we used to get out of doing our Pre-Calculus routine when the teacher would break out the 4-way chess board. Don't know if anybody has ever played it.

I can't remember the rules and all but it was fun and challenging. After we learned how to play on that my cousin made an 8-way chess board. It was a really good idea but almost impossible to find 8 players at any given time.

So our biggest fun was making a chess game into a drinking game after that. Good idea?!
