So sick of low ballers on Craigslist

So I got a truck for sale on Craigslist. Made the mistake of putting on the ad "Will consider trade for tractor" so far I've had offers of an M5 that's worth about $2k . A B Allis that had a significant oil leak from front. A 300 utility that when I asked if uses oil, if the lights work, if it smokes. Etc. Hes like "um I'll get back to you" .Just getting sick of this. Truck I have for sale. KBB is $6k which I think is high. And thats the price as of a month ago. But the guy I bought it from gave me the lien release card and showed me the loan paper work and he financed it for $6,250 when he bought it one year before he sold it to me. So someone at the bank must believe the Kelley Blue Book price. Them bankers are usauly pretty in the know on what vehicles are worth. So I got it priced at $3,995. Which is what I think its worth. BUT if the bankers and KBB is right thats a hell of deal. So when people what to trade for something thats worth $4k on a good day and I put money to boot it realy takes the cake. Sorry for the rant. Needed to vent. Sod Buster

SodBuster87- I had a Brother-in-law that used that
method.

He would buy a vehicle at auction that was well below the
KBB Loan value. Then he had a local friendly banker that
would finance the vehicle at full KB value.

Let's say BIL bought a vehicle for $2000.000 at auction
but the NADA Loan value was $8000.00. BIL bought the
vehicle. Then, local 'friendly' banker approved loan for
$8000.00 loan value on vehicle.

BIL would promote car as "You, just take over payments
and I'll give you the payment book".

So, he just made $6000.00.

That is why I always list a price and forget about "trades" on Craigslist. I have bought a lot of things off Craigslist.

Not sure i follow. If he borrowed X amount of money he still owes the bank for the loan. He realy didnt make X amount he just borrowed it. And still owes it plus interest. The truck in question I paid cash for. About $4,250 actauly. So he lost the difference but wrote it off. Pretty much what I am going to do.. So regardless it comes down to how much a person believes in KBB. What a person actauly paid doesnt matter. My father lost a vehicle in a tornado a few years back. He paid $15k. Insurance totaled it out for $19k. What I paid for the truck has no bearing on what it actually worth.

never mind I get it now. Sorry edit button dont work.

There certainly are alot of 'dreamers' on craigslist. Seems like most of them don't have any money. They just play with you. I just listed a tractor last month for what I thought was good price and all I got were tire kickers. Out of 15, just one came to look at it.

Hello. Banks and insurance companies are
clueless to real vehicle values! They use
publications like K. Blue Book and others
like value guides. These value guides are
VERY inflated! What many failed to take
into account is CONDITION. I am not a
dealer but my job has me seeing/working
with vehicle values every day. I see so
many people mislead on values every day. I
always say it's worth what someone will pay
you for it.

Craig's list is nothing more than online classified advertising. About the same thing as putting an ad in the local paper.
For that reason, you will ALWAYS get lowballers. You will also get scammers. This is part of doing business that way. The scammers and lowballers have just migrated from the newspaper to the electronic media. Not much point in getting upset about it.

I have seen both good and bad on CL and Face Book groups. Just something to put up with I guess. I have had fairly good luck buying items from both. Just picked up a 1992 F350 crew cab on Monday that I am happy with. Not exactly what I wanted but it will work for the price of $3500. Clean as a whistle, 199000 showing, and just as seller described. You just have put up with some idiots I guess.

Hum ? And I was just thinking I'm sick of all the "high ballers" that think their stuff is worth a fortune ? Not to pick on you either but it goes both ways. I see so much stuff listed on there for years on end. The good priced stuff seems to go FAST !
Many of the things I list I have no clue what it may be worth so I put a price on it and see if I get calls. If not then I start dropping the price until the phone rings.
This type of stuff has been going on since the beginning of time. Craigslist just "draws" in more of them.

I buy and sell so much stuff online it's sickening. One thing that is common is that people price their items based on what they see other people
are asking for something similar. NOT pricing their things like what is actually SELLING. I have seen a lot of these "good deals" sit for a year
or more. I sell things because I want to get rid of them. If I "loved" them I wouldn't list them in the first place. People shop online because
that's where the deals can be found if you're willing to search enough. The reason people make 'low ball' offers is because sometimes it works.

The only thing I'll trade for when listing on Craigslist is cash.

Its a free service. Unfortunately, the lowballers are just part of the deal.

I do a good bit of dealing on Craigs list and low ball offers are just a fact of life, hit delete and let it go is my advise. Lots more good people than bad. The last 4 items I sold went for listed price to first person that contacted me, a few of those type sales sure helps get past the LBs.

I've sold equipment on CL and I've bought
equipment on CL. I buy it, use it, resell it on CL.
There are tire kickers everywhere... You just have to
be able to tell how serious they are.. Usually, Pics
and Price = Purchases.

Take your original Craigslist ad down and replace it with: "Cash only, prices FIRM".

If you're going to sweat things like lowballers you shouldn't be trying to deal on CL,if I get one good prospect out of every 10 people that get in contact with me I consider it a good day.I always just let them
email me no phone posted then I can rule out about 85% of the responders by not replying to their email, then when I reply I give my phone number and tell them to call if they are interested
that kicks out a bunch more as most that call are reasonably interested.

I've gotten some great trades off CL,people have things they don't want/need but no cash and will trade something that has a lot of value for something that doesn't.

Thats what I ended up doing. I quess I still haven't learned to put "price is firm" though. Thing of it is if someone was serious I would come down. But certinly not when your offering me half of the asking price. Sod buster

I just bought my 3rd vehicle off Craigslist..It was a 1991 Ford Ranger with 114,000 miles located
250 miles away priced for $1600...It had been on for several weeks so I emailed him and said whats
your best price...He said $1300 and I'll meet you part way..So we met and the truck was just like
he said it was and even had a nearly full tank of gas..

The white 1997 Ford F-350 behind the Ranger is a Craigslist truck from Tyler,Texas that had 122,000
miles..The 460 did crack a head but I got 2 years of use out of it and I'm now replacing it with
a head from a $300 Ford 460 from a Craigslist ad..

My best buy was this one owner 2004 Grand Prix with only 68,314 miles....I found the ad about
10 minutes after it was placed or I would have never gotten it as his phone rang off the wall..

I also sell on Craigslist and have had pretty good luck....No matter where you advertise there will be
always be low ballers..I've put stuff for sale on here and have been low balled..

I have an two ads on Craiglist to sell two old cars that I am never gonna get to. In the Craiglist ad, I have stated: "CASH ONLY", No PAYPAL, no checks, etc. I still get people that want to sent checks or do PAYPAL. Constantly have to ask them, "Did you read the ad completely? It says: "CASH ONLY". Really irrates me after awhile. And I'm not asking for a lot of money for these two cars. Just want to sell them off to clean out my "inventory"

If somebody tries to talk me down on the phone,I just say no,I've had a lot of interest in it,I'll give them a chance to get here to look at it. That lights a fire under anybody who's serious and gets rid of the tire kicking "pawn star" wannabees.

Not saying you're wrong to want cash, but I was pondering something when I bought a tractor off CL last month and asked the guy if he wanted cash or a check. What's so different about CL that you have to meet in a public place and pay cash? Used to be if somebody advertised in a print ad they'd tell you how to get to their house and take a personal check when you got there.

My thing about lowballers is, it doesn't hurt to ask. You never know. The guy may just be fishing for a high price and would accept a lower offer, or even a trade. Maybe the guy has a soft spot for junk tractors. You just never know.

There's no sense in getting all butthurt about it. If you're not agreeable to the deal, just say no, or don't respond.

I have to remind myself not to get irritated. So many people don't read the ads completely. After 25 texts / calls it gets old.

While I agree people low ball on CL (Just sold a vhull flat bottom boat to pay property taxes and people were offering far below what I was worth when it was already a great deal) a lot of people set things too high then refuse to haggle. Like someone is going to give you 5k for that 8N with the engine smoking...

BTW heres the "gold mine" thats worth a $4k truck AND money to boot.

Didnt even know if the lights worked. I guess its so compilicated to hit a switch and see if they light up. I wasnt asking why they didnt work. Only do they light up or not. If he cant tell me that then what else is he "forgetting" to tell me

I just sold a nice original 300 with a two bottom plow,5ft rotary mower,and a 7
ft blade for 2800.It had a fast hitch.

I bet that guy was shopping CL or elsewhere for something you would take in trade. He did not have it in his possession.
If you had agreed to trade for it, he would have bought it for $500 etc. and traded it to you.

Spent 11 years working for a car dealership. Kelly blue book is a very poor guideline to use. Most vehicles
sold at private dealer auction bring more than KBB. As stated above condition is everything. Unfortunately
most people have a unit that they think is excellent as described on KBB when actually it is poor to fair
condition. Have no idea what yours is. Good luck with your sale.

Currently have taken the stance of dont care if it sells or not. Guy I've known for about five years asked me tonight if I'd rent to him for about 4 days so he could haul hay. I asked him what it would be worth. Well my insurance is paid for the next 3 months and the license tabs are paid for another year off his. "Rent" so I guess if it sits for the next 11 weeks it dont bother me. Know the guy well enough that he won't break it and if he does he'll fix it. Had the dumb idea that if I do that a couple times a year the truck is "free" for me. I bought the truck with cash so I have no payments to make. For that matter pull insurance off and leave it sit. Truck in question:

A few years back, I checked out a 40's Diamond T truck. The fellow wanted $10,000.
Just cab and chassis, but in good restorable shape. I told him he was a bit out of line.
He said, "But, that's what they're getting in California!!" I said "Well, I guess you better load it up and sell it there. See you around." Seems like some have no realistic ideas of values.
