More On The Gas Tank

A follow up on last week's question I posted about draining my Blazer's gas tank. Had to remove the vent hose at the tank and get a small hose in there to siphon it. Took about an hour to get 5 gallons out but at least it is down below the leak and the tank is dry on the outside now. I have the new tank and just waiting to get it installed. That and the rear brake cylinders. After that maybe look into those warped front rotors. I shot some video of the job so far. Nothing too outstanding, but it might help me remember what the job involved.

I've had many cars/trucks in the last fifty plus years, all GM, very few complaints with any of them. The most hated dog of the bunch was a loaded 97 GMC Jimmy. Had 35000 miles on it, two and a half years old, cost me $17400. Previously owned by a rich old girl that mainly used it to haul her golf clubs. At about 40,000 miles it just turned to junk, something wrong constantly, never hated anything more in my life.

I have never seen anything with the letters GM that would stay running long enough to not put a tongue in it and junk the drivetrain. Dad bought an old 60's model 60chevy 283 5 spde with 2 spd rearend. Would start right up and then stop just as quick. Then if you could get it to start you were lucky. My brother bought an old 60's or early 70's chevy Cabover tandem hauled 1 load of beans and 1 load of corn hauled it home to get off road and has set since. Would like to see it go down the road. Has a hoist and 5 and 4 trans in it. Or some combination like that one lever is froze or something will not shift.

I'm not complaining too much on the overall vehicle. People tell me that 4.3 engine is next to bullet proof and will likely outlast me. Electronics seem the biggest bug. Had an ignition switch fail for no apparent reason and it nearly left me stranded. Front brake rotors have warped for no apparent reason. This fuel tank leak is just a poor design that trapped mud right between the frame and tank. Guaranteed to rust. Its the first fuel tank I've had to replace on a vehicle. (Except for the 52 Mercury).
Right about now , 31 years ago I was doing an engine transplant on my 81 GMC pickup. The original 350 Olds diesel had warped the heads and was leaking coolant into the cylinders. I think I made the right decision when I replaced it with a junkyard 403 Oldsmobile gas engine because it has given me 31 years of trouble free and reliable performance. I've still got the old 71 C10 in the shed as a backup vehicle if this one does fail me. I can't say too much against GM vehicles. Overall they have treated me well. I'm hoping this Blazer will do the same.
