Farmall H transmission

Much depends on your mechanical skill, the availability of tools, and the components needed ahead of time. What are your
circumstances? Jim

O.K. Are you questioning some shop's quote on labor? I bet 20-30 hours would not be unheard of. Perhaps more.

Gotta get it all apart.

And with a tractor like an H, it will be in pieces: Large tires, engine and front end, gas tank, etc. All will have to be dealt with somehow.

Then you support the transmission somehow.

Then you take it apart.

Gotta clean up all the internal parts, inspect them. Order new parts. Some time searching for parts by phone or internet.

Then put it back together.

If bearing pre-load and gear lash is specified, some parts, like the differential, will come apart multiple times before its factory specified correct.

Eventually you get to the part where you have to put the whole tractor back together.

Never had an H in the shop. But it took 3 months to get a Moline U apart and back together once.

If you're like the rest of us that play with tractors as a hobby our time doesn't count or do we keep track of the hours but more like
guess at them on how long a project takes. We usually count months not hours..LOL
It depends on what you need to do to the transmission on how far apart you'll need to take it. If you're going to replace any bearings
on the input shaft you'll end up splitting the tractor in half, so you're looking at wiring harness, gas tank removal, steering shaft,
then pulling the bellhousing off the transmission. All this before opening up the transmission.

Thanks for the reply. It's an awkward situation. We bought an H for $700 knowing that it had transmission problems. Later we took it to a "shade tree mechanic" that we thought was dependable. To help him out, we paid him in advance to expedite the job.
Long story short, two years later the tractor is still in two pieces. After countless promises to "finish it this weekend" we've had to file a claim before the judge. We're not sure that it will matter, but just in case the judge asks, we want to be prepared to answer that question.
Actually, since he didn't finish the job, the judge may ask how many hours just to take it apart.

I did mine and I had parts on hand,...2 days and I was up and running. and i'm not a fast worker.

Depends on what you mean by "rebuild". At least on an H you don't have to split the tractor to do the transmission.

I replaced all of the bearings in the trans of an H a year ago last summer and I probably spent as much time chasing parts as actually working on the tractor.

You are counting things that are not a part of actual working time, waiting on a tool or a part is not a part of time to do the job as is the time away for other things. I don't know the answer as never worked on one but has an H from 1949 to 1984.

Tear down only (no need to split, just remove the top and clutch shaft and Liftall would be about 6 hrs. If he took it apart (split) it should not be paid for as it is
unnecessary. The inconvenience of having to put it back together to move it is serious. I think he owes full repayment for that error. Jim

Spent the money on other stuff, now doesn't have money for parts. And now your project is not a "money maker" so can't work on it as he has other money makers to work on. so sorry for your circumstance. I'm sure you've heard all the excuses. There were a great number of H's made lots of parts available. gobble

About twenty five years ago I went to an old IH mechanics estate sale and among other things bought a couple of boxes of Blue Ribbon Service manuals, on the bottom of the pile was a complete flat rate manual copyright 1959. It's a little confusing compared to the automotive manuals I'm used to but looks to me like a transmission and differential overhaul would cost around $80.00 labor figured at $5.00 per hour which should equate to sixteen hours. If your not going that far checking bearings and preload and backlash it will be a few hours less.
