Seed Source for Plate Planters

I'm sure I'm not the only one that's been looking for this but who has seed that can be run through a plate planter? It seems like this spring I remember maybe seeing it on a LG bag? But looking for beans and field corn.

Pioneer;DeKalb, others have graded seed. I use a Jd#71 plate planter and have no trouble getting proper seed.

I believe most any seed company can provide it. The big thing is the dealer that only wants to handle one grade and that it the plateless. And the new racehorse varities will be harder to get as graded seed but stay away from for the first 2 years they are out as the 3rd year they are likely to fail and be gone for the 4th year. The old standby's are going to be easier to get as graded varities. And if you are near an Amish community you will find more dealers willing to order the plate seed for you as most Amish still use plate planters with them being the old horse drawn 2 row planters. That 449 series McD planters is the most popular 4 row planter out there for the Amish as it is the only clutch lift planter than can be set for 30" rows that parts and plates are avaible for. Couple of years ago was in an Amish store and they had just about every plate made hanging from the ceiling, just a few sizes were sold out. If the area is in that the dealer can sell 500 bags to one customer of one number and grade you can be sure he will not want to mess with trying to sell perhaps 10 bags of graded seed because he has to handle it differently. So look for a dealer that is not hooked to the mega size farmers.

Go talk to several local seed dealers this fall, before seed ordering season.Find out who will work with you.Place your order early if needed. The guys who only want to deal with mega farmers arnt worth YOUR time.Generally speaking,a farmer who sells seed is more likely to deal with you and take care of you than a big coop,or similar outfit.

I ordered my corn seed in Oct. I always order a flat seed to work in my I-H steel wheel planter. I can still get plates for it from the seed dealer all though I usually have the plate recommended on the back of the bag. I get my seed from Great Lakes Hybrid. You probably need to order your seed in advance to assure the availability but I always thought most seed dealers could get you the seed you need. Although I may be in the same boat as you anytime now as my dealer is 88 yrs old.
