Expensive hydraulic pump

The guy I'm remodeling for is a high powered PHD engineer for Medtronic.
He mentioned he would bring a sample of the project he's working on home so I could see it. He showed it to me this morning.
It's a heart pump that is permanently inserted into the chest cavity and bypasses the heart. The heart is left in place. The pigtail on it comes out of the body below the rib cage and plugs into a battery pack. I asked him what something like that costs and he wouldn't say but but he did say just to manufacture it costs north of the price of a new Camry.
I asked if I could post these photos here and he said ok.
I run in to some interesting things and people at my job.

Medical stuff is out of this world. My wifes insulin pump is over $8000. It is made by Medtronic,BTW.

Very cool but it brings some question to mind. I wonder if the heart keeps beating anyway or does it just sit there? If not the person would not have a heart beat. Also I wonder if they have it connected to a variable speed motor so the person could speed it up for running and slow it down for sleeping. You would think the motor would make some sound and vibration which would be kind of weird but I guess that better than dirt in the face.

Cool!

See if you can sneak me one out.

I can just tee it into an artery, run it off a battery pack, set my BP to whatever I want! LOL

I wonder if I could get that thing to work on an RC airplane engine?? Miniature turbocharger. Yup, that oughtta get 'er another 30 MPH or so! *lol*

If the injection pump quits, the engine dies. If this pump quits, well you know the rest of the story. My son in law and one of my granddaughters work at a company that makes medical equipment parts. One of the customers of this company is Medtronic. They told me I wouldn't believe how many precautions and tests and re-tests they go through when making a mechanical part or a wiring harness.
