Topic Titles on this Forum Puzzle Me ????

How do what appear to be "replies" show up here as new topics? Several examples down below. Or in reverse, what appears to be a new post has a "Re:" at the start of the post title. How does that happen I wonder?

It leaves me scratching my head sometimes too. It's been asked on the site comments forum and explained, but all that computer talk is over my head.

From my understanding.......... the two forum systems (modern and classic) talk to each other like two people with different accents talk...with a little translation, and things get lost in that translation. In classic there is limited space for post before they drop in to history, were modern keeps them alive for longer. Now once a topic falls off of classic timeline its gone. When someone brings the topic back up top in Modern...there is no longer the connection to original post in classic so it comes up a "new topic" that then gets replies in both versions causing further disruption.

Then there are people who make a new topic instead of replying to previous post and use the Re as the start of the topic heading.

help any or did I just stir the mud puddle?

I've noticed that on Classic, but I'm not on modern much except when one of these popup on classic. I just click on one of the Re, and when it comes up I click on modern view where it is fixed.

Some threads develop glitches, and the replies show up as a new topic.

Happened to me when I replied to the 'list your combines' thread.

I'm always in classic mode.

Perhaps the person titled his post Re: Whatever

I understand it is from a person goes back in the archives to a post and tries to respond to it as when they go into the archives they are no longer able to be posted to.

In modern view it doesn't matter how old the thread is--You reply to it and it just comes back to the top as a new reply. At least that's the way it would work if modern was here by itself. It's the 18th century classic view that messes everything up.

Well Rich, I have used Classic since I have been on here, and it always has worked well. You guys who prefer Modern View have screwed everything up. The system wasn't broken; but someone tried to fix it. Now we got a mess.

The only thing I like about classic view is that it is easier to make a clean link to a video. Otherwise modern view is so much better for me. A reply to an old topic brings it right back up to the top of the page where it is easy to find. On classic I might have to go a few pages back searching (if I have time) to see replies.

Loren, I agree with you. Wish they would drop modern and just use classic as something that works. They moved somethings from classic to modern and now they don't work as they did. 20 years I have been on here.

I was on here for over ten years and made the switch to modern. It works better for me. I am not too cool to change!!!

My plow I?d thread got split up into 3 different pieces the other day but it?s the first time I?ve had it happen

Yes, it's the interaction between classic and modern view that causes that. Frankly, it works amazingly well considering what it is doing, and those that prefer it one way or the other should be appreciative that the owners of this site accommodate you all as well as they do.

Some people find the "replies bring topics back to the top" confusing. Others like myself find, "having to chase 4-5 pages back to see new replies to a thread we were participating in" confusing.

Well, here is a thought...
When I use classic view, I can easily see what I have read or not read at a glance. In modern, I get all turned around as to what I have read and what I have not.
I like to try to read everything in chronological order. I don't need each topic jumping around from bottom to top or top to bottom. Just read in order - if that makes sense.

Honestly, no it doesnt.

In modern view there is a yellow marker next to any topics with new posts in them. After I read the topic, the yellow marker disappears, so I know I am up to date on that topic.

In classic view, if a thread has been going on for 2-3 days, like this one surely will for example, it will have recent replies, but be listed on the 3rd or 4th page of topics. To me it is a pain to have to wade through multiple pages of topics to see if a thread that I am interested in has received any replies.

With modern view it is obvious: If the topic is listed with a little yellow marker next to it, it has new replies. There is no "jumping around." The topic with the most recent reply is simply moved to the top of the list.

I don't disparage those who choose classic view, and I would respectfully ask that others don't disparage those of us who choose modern view.

This is truly a unique arrangement on the Internet and IMHO it should stay as it is for that simple reason, as long as the hardware and software continue to support it. Whoever came up with the software that keeps the two forum boards in sync deserves a Nobel prize if you ask me. They're absolutely brilliant.

I guess which forum one utilizes determines the ease to know which threads have been read/replied to. On Modern view threads that have been read/replied to will be "highlighted & normally higher up on 1st page"(depending on forum traffic at the time) not buried 2,3 or more pages down as in Classic view.

I guess it gets back to the old saying "different strokes for different folks"!

JMG, that is what I like most about modern view is how easily I can see what I have read and what I haven't. It is all on the first page, so I virtually never go past the first page. So, no, you post makes no sense whatsoever.

If you follow the "Site Comments" forum at all, YT Support has acknowledged any number of times that classic is basically obsolete. I get the impression that they are using the digital equivalent of duct tape and baling wire just to keep the thing running halfway decent.
You boys can say whatever you want and use whichever you want, but I predict that at some point you will need to suck it up and get with the program.

Rich, I agree very strongly with you, but we all have to keep in mind that we are primarily an old crew here and most take great pride in sticking to the old ways. I agree that it will happen and many will withdraw in disgust for a week or two then come back, and everything will be back to normal. And of course none of the classic guys will admit to liking modern better once they see how much more user friendly it is.
