I have a fiberglass shower and tub combination. I want to install a safety rail and do not know what kind of fastener or adhesive to use. Any help? Old Man With Broken Ankle

Not off topic at all, wer'e all getting older and need to be safe! Without seeing it it's hard to give advice, but I know the one we have in the cabin is too flimsy to just atach to the fibrglass, I would have to slip sone backing in behind it. Can you do that? Otherwise can you locate the studs? Maybe use a walker to get in and then sit on a shower stool, good luck

Without knowing anything more of the home or the fiberglass construction, I would advise to use something like this:

I've seen some fiberglass surrounds that were very thin and flimsy. Then there's the matter of trying to find studs on the other side. If you're only needing for balance, then the suction-cup models should work ok, but I went through a serious ankle injury as a kid (when young, healthy and MUCH lighter than I am now!!), and something like this bathtub handle will be able to support your full weight without fail. Plus you have the added benefit of this handle being removable if/when needed.

If it has a molded upper portion, cast into the edges are some wood reinforcements.

You can find them with an electronic stud finder. The grab bars should come with some large stainless screws. They will hold if you can get them in the reinforcement.

If it is just the flat panel type, go above with the stud finder and determine where the wall studs are, go into them if possible.

Depending on the length of the bar, sometimes you can only get a good fasten on one end. Then you will need some expanding type fasteners to get behind the fiberglass and/or drywall. The bar mfg will have recommendations, but usually have to be purchased separately. I like to silicone around the brackets to keep water out of the wall and prevent the fastener from rusting.

I agree not OT!!! I have done this twice recently. I know that it can be difficult to find the studs, but most tub/showers have a partial wall at one end or the other, so if you put it on the partial wall end you know that you will have three and a half inches of wood behind it.

I am getting real, real tempted to hang a trapeze chain/handle from the joist on top of mine. I have a good solid grab bar on the side but by itself that is not all that helpful.

2 things to consider.
Make sure there are no electric wires in wall to run screws onto. People have been electrocuted doing so.
2nd my tub and shower does not fit up to the studs except on top edges. There is a gap which will take a lot of strength out of the assembly.

I have the Aqua Sense Bathtub Safety Rail and love it. Helps keep your balance when getting in or out of tub.
