got hit by a semi

OT...My 1987 4x4 tubo diesel classic had less than 97000 miles. I was driving down the highway and a semi ran into me. Bent the seat back and put my head though the rear window. Does it look like the truck box is fixable. The frame also is bent.

Hopefully you are okay and will not suffer from the impact. Was the
headrest up on the seat? It is supposed to help in that situation.

Not many survive being hit by a semi, someone was watching over you.....The truck not
so much, esp. If the frame is bent between the axles. Ben

If you just have to have a 30 year old truck , this part of the country one would go to scrap yard and get a bed cheaper and better than trying to fix that one. If the frame is bent you might just want to forget it.

If you are not satisfied with the offer from the insurance company, tell them to find you a similar or better truck that they
can buy for you. According to a relative of mine who is in the insurance business, it is ultimately their responsibility to
find you a replacement. I would require them to supply a vehicle until yours is replaced.

Just looking how the box is bent, the frame bent between the front & back spring perches. Probably the
weakest place on the whole frame.

Having the seat back bend backwards and breaking the rear window in a SuperCab truck is something! Bending
the back wall of the cab doesn't take much.

I wish my '96 F-250 only had 97,000 miles. There may be a few low mile '87 F-250 SuperCab trucks out there
but they don't come up for sale very often. My '87 was rusting in '96 even with aftetmarket rust proofing.

What brand of rear bumper is that? Looks a lot like my DMI 10 inch drop bumper. It took most of the force
of impact.

Go to the emergency room and tell them about your extremely sore neck and hurting back.Indicate to the adjuster it'll make them both feel a lot better if you get a good settlement on
the truck.

I just bought a super cab 5spd out of Pueblo CO, desert country, at least compared to west central MN. Absolutely rust and rot free. On Denver Craigs list. My other 97 here on the farm, the 7.3 came from Arizona. No one wants the manual trans, which is all I'll have on the farm since I pull goosenecks, animals hay old Case stuff etc. I turned the "search" over to my eldest, who's a car nut anyway, and he came up with all sorts of mid 90s f250s and 350s......

IMHO, not fixable without a lot of work, and not worth fixing on a 20 year old truck let alone a 30 year old truck.

Unless you had some agreed-upon-value insurance you will probably get about 6 cents a pound for that truck as it sits there, from the insurance company. You're not going to get what it's worth, let alone what it's worth to you, so hopefully you carry no preconceived notions to that effect.

Also, this "the insurance company is obligated to find you a replacement (paraphrased)" is baloney, unless you have a special policy. They are obligated to pay you "average market value" for the vehicle if the vehicle is totaled, which it will be.

Assuming the insurance company totals it, if you just HAVE to have it fixed, buy it back from the insurance company and fix/have it fixed yourself. A shop with a heavy enough frame rack could do wonders. They'd want a replacement box with it so they could fit an undamaged box to check their work. The worst case scenario would be to clip the frame ahead of where it's bent and weld a good frame section onto it. But look for it to be a money pit. It depends on how much you value the truck and how much you want to spend.

I once fixed a C60 Chevy farm truck that had been in an accident and had the frame bent, but we had to go halfway across the state to find a frame rack that would handle it.

Head went through the back window and it is a extended cab? Things could have gone a lot worse for
you --- I would just be glad that you are still alive and let it all go . I have heard of people
getting killed from sand bags [for traction] comming through the back window. If it was my truck I
would have had some thing big and heavy in the back -- or a jug of gas that would have ruptured and
caught fire .

I'm glad you survived without any serious injuries.

As someone else mentioned, with "classics" you need to have an appraisal. If you have collision insurance for the appraised value, that would also give you some extra leverage to support your claim. If you are like most people who don't carry collision insurance on a old vehicle because "it's no worth as much as the deductible", you can't expect much.

The power train may have some salvage value, check with some salvage yards. I doubt there is much demand or value for the 30 year old front body parts anymore, the truck body will likely be crushed and shredded.

If it wasn't your fault, and from the looks of it, it wasn't, Tell the insurance company (Semi's company) that a new vehicle is way cheaper than a personal injury claim. My insurance company said that years ago that an adjuster will much rather pay for a truck (60,000) than a personal injury and Dr. care. They'll still pay for Dr. bills but will want you to 'sign on the bottom line' promising to not come back later for a claim.

97k miles? Wow, that's gonna be tough to replace. Best thing though is that you're OK. Still, go through the full process, and know that injuries from such accidents don't always show up right away. Try to keep a journal of how you're feeling, and even note in the journal times of the day that you feel just fine. If anything physiological should happen to come about later, such a journal could help your doctors with the best possible treatment. Hopefully your journal will be very dull reading.

Glad you're still with us!!

I bought a 2000 Chevy 4x4 1/2 ton that had been hit in the rear, not quite as bad as yours as the bed wasn't hurt. Bumper folded under and bent the frame just ahead of where the springs mount at the rear. I pulled the bed off, cut the frame where it was bent jacked it straight and welded gussets in to beef up where I cut. Been driving it for 8 years.

If you do buy it back, try to find a bed ~$1000.00 at the most. My bed has cancer and once in a while I check CL just to see if by chance I might find one in better shape than mine. Ford beds seem to be pretty common on the local Craigslist, for some reason much more so than Chevy. The rest you can fix yourself if you have any kind of shop at all.

I will double that. Soft tissue damage can be a real bwich.... If this
guy hit you did you get a police report. Talk to a injury lawer. Don't
mess around, quick, quick !!

Hi Glad you seem to be ok after that. The truck as others said forget it, and just hope the insurance company don't say it's worth nothing and give
you a bill for doing the paperwork ! . It kinda makes me mad when we get a new to us truck here in Canada with a private sale. They make us pay the
tax on what they say it's worth from the book not what we paid if it's a lesser figure, usually they use the top book figure. 2 days later something
gets totaled it's worth bottom figure or less.
Regards Robert

I have a 1996 F-350 Power Stroke Diesel with 30,000 miles that I bought new. Show room condition, inside and out Never eaten in it, never had a real load on it, no scratches, always garaged, and sprayed with oil on bottom. I only use it now to plow my driveway. It is not for sale!

(quoted from post at 12:18:47 11/20/17) If your head hit the back window of an extended cab, were you not wearing the seat belt?

When you get hit in rear the seat belts aren't quite as effective, plus it bent the seat back.

87's didn't have a head rest. The F series trucks didn't get those until the next body style came around 93 if I remember correctly.

His neck I'd going to be really sore the next day, and probably for a long time after.
