Hammer Mill Speed

A while back there was a discussion going on here about the recommended rpm of belt driven feed mills. I found the original manual for my old Case belt drive hammer mill and it states a recommended rpm of 3400.

I have an old David Bradley I converted to PTO. The original flat pulley was only about 4" in diameter. The speed range is stamped on it. 2000-3000, maybe 2200-3000? I can't remember. It's quite a versatile machine. I have successfully cracked grain with it, running under speed. The problem with that is the blower isn't running fast enough to work. I got the finest screen available for it and ground our own wheat into flour. The problem with that were the ever present specks of rust coming off the machine. Not good in the bread!

I thought belt driven machinery were spec'd at belt feet per minute.....thus at the
rated belt speed of the tractors pulley, one knew the machine was turning at the
correct rpm. Ben

I think the speed printed on our old David Bradley was 22RPM and with a direction arrow and with the RPM you were supposed to be able to calculate the belt speed needed. But the mill has been gone for like 30 some years.

Interesting post - I did not know one could make flour with a hammer mill. I do remember dad looked like he was rolled in flour after he finished grinding corn for the dairy cows.

You might try a several good magnets to screen out the rust specs.

(quoted from post at 05:35:28 11/20/17) Standard belt speed is 3100 FEET per minute. Might it be that is what is in the manual?
No, it is revolutions per minute measured on the hammer mill shaft that the manual specifies. And yes, you can make flour. Interesting that we used to change from the small (3/8 inch) hole screen to grind oats and then use the big 2 inch hole screen to grind hay and straw. In later years I just used the big hole screen for grain. The small hole screen was literally wearing out. We found the big hole screen still did an acceptable job of grinding oats for cattle feed. You don't want it too fine.
Surely you have all seen me at work with my old hammer mill but I'll post the video link again.

I always just gave them full tractor throttle and wished for more. If you run too slow the fan cannot keep the ground feed blown in to the hopper

(quoted from post at 08:12:12 11/20/17) Good Video! I remember my Dad doing that when i was a kid back in early 50's
Thanks. I grew up helping my dad feed the hammer mill every winter. Now I do it myself, but for less cattle.
Further information from the Cockshutt 50 manual. Belt pulley speed on the tractor is 1000 rpm at rated engine rpm of 1650. This gives a belt speed in around the 3100 feet per minute and will hopefully be hitting the 3400 rpm point on the hammer mill.
More information you didn't ask for.
