Thought I burnt up my fuel pump

Brought home a super 88. Been trying to get it started but won't take. It has been sitting awhile and previous owner had problems. He installed an electric fuel pump. Anyway I decided to jump start it. It's positive ground. So is the fuel pump. I hooked it to my car +to + and -to-. The fuel pump quit so I got the test light and it still had power. I decided to take a break and think about it. Well I just went out to button things up cuz rain is coming. Low and behold the fuel pump is running. Must've had an internal circuit breaker.

It was working until I tried to jump start it. I don't know if my car being neg ground and tractor being positive ground had something to do with it.

If the car and tractor weren't physically touching each other your way of jumping should not have hurt anything. A Super 88 is 12 volt isn't it? The straight 88 is six volt.

I hope that one that I ordered works OK when I put it on. It's not here yet. Somebody already put one on it,but no matter how I wire that one it won't work right. I touched the wires right to a bare battery, the wire with the plus next to it to positive and it will click just once. When I take the wire off,it will shoot a little shot of fuel out,but then nothing. I can get it primed and start it,but as soon as it burns off the fuel from the injector pump and what little is sucks from the filters, the engine dies.

This is the style I have on my s77 and s88. So far no problems with the s77. I do plan on putting factory pumps back on eventually. I have them but haven't got round to it.

I ordered this cheap little thing for $18. I plan to get the right mechanical pump too,but I'll need a bunch of things for it before I'm done and they'll have to come from Canada or England most likely and I don't want to pay shipping that far more than once if I can help it.

They make priming a little easier but I would rather have original. Good to have when working on a new one.

I think my fuel pump pumped all the diesel in my oil. It is a 4-7 lb. pump. I'm going to have to go drain the oil. Seems very thin and I think it's leaking out the main seal. Guess I'm lucky it didn't start.

I don't know what the deal is with this one. It's been unhooked and they put the electric one on. Maybe it just needs a rebuild kit.

Is that on your 500? O they make a kit I drain 4 gallons of oil and I think diesel out of mine. Some may have been in there already. I put some more diesel in and think the return is working. Maybe the seals are dry in the injection pump. Probably will have to reseal the head? Maybe it will start then. Wish I new more about psb pumps. Guess I learning the hard way.

I've got a real early s88 diesel. My transfer pump is bad. Do they make them with the lever primer? Mine is of first 150 off the line.

You can get a kit from Korves. It's for the newer pumps. The diaphragm is suppose to interchange but the check valves do not.

Cool! Mine hasn't run since late 80s.
Excellent shape tho. Can't find sn
data on it. Maybe a demo model? Anyone
know much on the first batch of super
88s made? I think I was told the first
run was 150-200 tractors.

ID tag should be on left side of dash. If it's missing you should at least see rivet holes.
If it has been sitting that long there's a good chance the plunger is stuck in the injection pump. If you turn the engine at all it could break and they are no longer available.

Yes, id tag on dash. Engine is not
stuck, but I have turned engine by
hand gently. Has no serial numbers,
other than the tag, where it supposed
to have serial numbers, has date
instead.

The plunger in the injection head is smaller than a pencil. I have been told it can break even turning it by hand. Hope yours isn't. That is interesting about the id tag. You should post down in the Oliver section with some pics.

I hope not. I planned to pull the pump off
and have it rebuilt. Nothing is rusty or
froze up anywhere. I had head off,
cleaned up.
