Ford 601 Isd My Motor Toast??

Bought a 601 parts tractor and in attempting to assess
the motor condition (parked outside 30+ years ago)
I pulled the plugs, Squirted ATF in cylinders, freed
stuck motor with extended breaker bar, and can
crank it now by fan blades. After many hand turnovers
I freed up the starter and tested compression.
0 0 20 0

Set up compressor with regulator and 2 female quick
connects with "T" to pressure gauge. Can apply compressor
to setup and gauge holds fine. Connect 'T' setup to cylinder
with valves at TDC and push rods loose and as soon as
I remove air hose the pressure drops to 0.

I attached nitryl gloves to exhaust and carb and taped on
gloves. With pressure applied and turning over by hand
the gloves puff up when valves open.
At TDC the gloves do not puff up but I am loosing
all pressure. I suspect rings or some other head leakage
but am unable to detect air in crankcase.

This happens even with new ATF applied to cylinder tops.

I do not need the engine for my running 801

I would take a small hammer and give each of the valves a few taps on the very top to see if they are moving freely and seating properly.

Sticking guides or 30 years of crud growing on the valves and seats could cause the low readings you are getting.

Very likely the rings are sticking but I expect you would see a little more compression than you are getting on a wet test.

On and engine that was stuck a little ATF is not enough. One needs to fil the cylinders with ATF and let it sit a week or so, so the ATF has time to work it way down and past the rings. Also pouring ATF down the exhaust till it cannot hold any more helps. Always put the plugs back in so you can pour it in the exhaust and also to keep dirt etc. out of the engine

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DO NOT CRANK IT OVER WHEN FULL OF ATF OR ANY FLUIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take the plugs back out FIRST, crank it over to get all of the fluids out or you will bent a rod or worse.

I would suspect valves are sticking open, or not seating correctly first. After I was sure they were closing and seating, then I would look further at the piston rings...

I rechecked and found with the valve cover removed that
with the valves closed The gloves on 3 cylinders are
flat (no leakage). on the 4 th piston with TDC both gloves are
slightly puffy.

On each cylinder I am feeling air coming out the oil gallery.when applying constant 40 psi.

So i suspect rings are shot/broken/cracked, and
one cylinder both valves are also leaking.

Sounds like a major rebuild.
Don't know if a 42 hp motor is worth
it,to be kept as a spare.

As I said fill the cylinders up and also fill the exhaust and walk away for a week or 3 and then try again almost bet you will find it has improved a whole lot. And as one of the other guys said do not crank it over with the ATF in the cylinders and the plugs still in. But you can turn it over by hand with the plugs in and full of ATF so as to add pressure to help push the ATF up to the valves and down past the rings

You think any damage to the rings I may have done by
only soaking it 1 day may actually improve
with total soaking a lot longer.

Sounds like a plan to me

I'll start soaking it today.

I have never seen any damage caused by that type of thing. Ya if it was locked up due to a lot of water In a cylinder that can cause major ring problems but most engines lock up just from sitting a long time
