old wood stove

I have a old wood stove/ furance in basement that is going to need replaced it has hot and cold return ducts any ideas what to put in is place idont think i can use an outdoor
burner

Is it a wood-furnace only or a combo multifuel? If wood only, a new EPA replacement works pretty nice. Burns amazingly clean for a furnace. Unlike woodstoves, furnaces have been exempt from EPA regs for a long time. Now some cleaning burning ones are showing up. I got my EPA furnace from Tractor Supply and really like it. It first was for sale only in Canada for big bucks and was called the "EPA Caddy." Now in the USA and a lot cheaper. I did NOT want an outdoor furnace and installed this one instead. I also looked into geo-thermal and decided against it. The ones used around here use a lot of electricity and well water pumping.

When I bought our place there was a wood burner hooked into the boiler heat system. Previous owners took the stove. I put in an airtight coal stove. Not hooked to boiler. I do not have return ducts, but have registers in the floor. Does a nice job keeping the house comfortable. Single story ranch. For me it works out well and is much less work than burning wood. Not saying that's what you need or want, but it works for me. It keeps the house around 65-68 when it's 25-30 out. After that the fuel boiler helps out. Just an option.

geothermal as far as electricity my bill was 150.00 last month. thats house and shop. well water pumping do not have clue what you are talking about there. has nothin to do with my well

WEll two hurdred plus ft from house how much to do that plus anything i need to make that work thought i could redo my piping and do an add on unit if i can mike the pipes work or change them i have three regersters . House is log from the 1880s and crawel space

Yes, but how cold was it? I checked with a few people here who installed geothermal and overall, they saved around 25% in their overall heating bill. That is compared to just heating with propane. Also does not figure in upkeep in equipment.

A "pump and dump" open loop uses well water. A closed loop like you must have, uses a methanol solution in the loop.
