air hose reels

I would like to get a couple air hose reels for the shop, but not sure what to buy. I see they range in price from $59 to $500. Just need 3/8 by 50 ft. Anyone have a brand or source for ones you like? Thanks for any input.

When I did my shop improvement about 6 years ago my hose reel came from Northern Tool. It does everything that I need it to do. Very reasonable price as I recall. I put in a second drop and use a 50 foot air line without a reel from fleabay. That one is really light in weight so it is nice to drag out of the shop door with just some big loops to 'fold' up when done. Both share my air tool, tire, and blow gun use.

I bought one from Northern Tool a few years ago but replaced the chinaJUNK hose this year with an American made. Original would constantly crack at a bend in the mounting....kept cutting it shorter and shorter.

Got several cheap ones from Home Depot, been in use several years now.

No problem with the reels, just bad hoses.

Easy to replace the hose, just count on it happening in a year or so.

If you get a manual crank one, do not get one with the spoke wheel, get a full wheel as the spoke one catches the hose winding and unwinding.

I've got one from Harbor Freight. Its been up probably at least 12 years. No complaints. Still the original hose too.

i use the non automatic reels made for fifty holds 100ft hose. i mount mine to wall then go straight up ceiling thru a 1 pulley and 2 pulley and a three puley setup. my hoses are never hardly ever on the floor this way. got way tired of having hose in road all time, this setup realll works slick. when not in use hoses are hangin just above our heads etc. we just grap line and pull and it unrolls down. 1 line is hangin down from center of shop, 1 from far side shop and other two are hanging down right above hyd lifts.

Being an old, poor, broke, country redneck, I made one out of scrap wood and a piece of pipe and a bolt. It doesn't have auto-rewind, but I can live with having to crank it up by hand. Every time I use it I think about the money I saved not having to buy one. The harbor freight 50' ones have good reviews, but they say the hoses need to be replaced with something better.

I have four I got from Northern Tool $69/79 on sale. There's not much that can go wrong with one other than a o-ring on the swivel. BTw the last two I got the hose came with 3/8 pipe ends I had to buy adapters to get them back to 1/4". The hose last 3/4 years that's all I can get out of a Goodyear hose till I have to repair it are replace it...

I replaced a cheap hand reel from Harbor freight with a Goodyear from Northern and wished I had kept the Harbor Freight one. Replaced it because it only had a 25 foot hose and I really needed 50. I have not been able to stop the swivel O ring on the GY from leaking. Use to be able leave the shop and not worry about shutting off the main air valve, can't do that now.

The HF reel never leaked in the 10 years I used it and the hose was still good when I took it down. Gave it to a friend which is still using it or I would sure think about putting it back up.
