I.H. model 674.

I just got done looking at a International Harvester tractor model is a 674. It is a diesel engine and has a loader bucket on it. Question I need to throw out here is does any body have one of these around and what do you think of them? I can say this one is in very sad shape and needs some body to restore it. Which I got to say I could not walk away from it but maybe I should had. I need to know who might can tell me about this tractor if you like yours or hate it and why. This will tell me if I want to restore it or walk always from it thanks.

Neighbor had a 674 and never had any problems that I know of. I do know the 574 was a very good tractor and very popular as a loader tractor. They sometimes had problems with the parking break but that was caused by operaters forgetting to unlock them. Tom

If you need it for a 'user',then go for it. IMHO,a 674 isn't worth much as a 'restored' tractor.I wouldn't think there is much ''collector' value in it.

Have 2 674 gas tractors, very good tractors. Like Tom said, they can cause some issues if the operator leaves the park brake on and drives around. They make a lot of power for their size, more than they have tire to put it to the ground. Need lots of wheel weights if you don't want to spin all over. The D239 was a good engine, however some injection pump parts can be hard to find.

WE have a diesel with a loader. I like it. We have had very few problems with it. Make sure you check the PH of the coolant if you buy it.

I had a 674 diesel with loader for several years- never had any trouble with it- as others have said, easy to leave the parking brake on and burn it up. Shift linkage was different, but worked OK if you lubed it once in awhile (shoot some WD40 into it, good to go. Engine was noisy- but seems like most higher horsepower 4 cylinders are (maybe I was just spoiled with the 6 cylinder Olivers).

We have both a 574 and 674. Loader has been on the 574 since new. The other has been around only a few years. I like it for spreading fertilizer with in the spring. Cheap to run and pulls the spreader fine. Fairly easy to put GPS on and be out of the way of controls. Wiring is the usual cheap wiring IH always used. Poor covering and poor wire. Brakes were also the biggest problem on the 574 used the bucket to stop for half it's life by dropping it to the ground. The 574 has had a hard life on an old dairy farm. Used everyday do or die.
Put one set of sleeves in in about 10,000 hours. O-ring started leaking antifreeze into the oil. You can not get enough weight on the rear for it. We have 18.4-28's rear loaded and 300 in weight inside each wheel with about that on the outside also. So about 1200 hanging on the rear wheels both loaded and an old bale carrier with an old press gear of about 800 to put on in the winter if if gets to bad.

Which loader is on it? A quick-remove/quick-attach loader can double the usefulness of a loader tractor.

Check out the prices of that same tractor in better condition. It will likely cost you 3 to 10 times as much extra money (above your purchase price) to fix up a tractor in poor condition as it would to spend a little extra to buy one in good working condition, and you would not have the months and months of down time while the tractor is torn apart getting fixed.

You know I just have to say this one thing. I enjoy buying these basket case tractors because when I take them completely apart and rebuild them. There just like being new and might even be better than new one. Is it worth it? I think so and maybe it might make it to a show who knows. I do know this I need some thing to move snow around so I am hoping that it will do just that when I get restored.

I am not to Shure where I am on this tractor. I bought it from a farmer who has it torn apart. He threw a rod on the diesel engine. You might say there is a big whole on a side but I think I can find another block. I am looking forward in doing another basket case tractor. I have already done five tractors in the same sad shape. I bought it for 500.00 with front loader.
