While at the auction today I saw an unusual Oliver 1650. I talked to the owner a little bit. He told me that the first Oliver FWA tractors had a hydraulic drive instead of the mechanical drive like the later models. He stated that the hydraulic drive units did not hold up very well so Oliver went to the mechanical one. He is from around Reedsburg WI. Nice fellow.

HE told you a story. The hydraulic front wheel assist tractor were built by a company from Canada. The first one I ever saw was in 1963 or 64 at the M & W gear show over in Indiana. The first 50 series Oliver 50 series tractors with FWA were all mechanical drives

J. Schwiebert I could not argue either way because I do not know anything about them. I never saw or heard of one before seeing this one.

I came across one of those in a small town in central MA some 15 years ago. It was sitting in the dooryard of a non-operating farm with the auction tag still on it. My neighbors had a 4320 JD with the same sort of set-up on it. My buddy who worked for them thought that it made a pretty good difference in what the tractor would go through.

That looks like one from a large Oliver collection that was sold at auction earlier this year. I don't remember what outfit ran the auction but I did get a glossy color catalog in the mail so it was one of the big outfits.

The guy had a whole bunch of rare Olivers and Cockshutts with a few other brands mixed in. There were three of these HFWA tractors on the auction and a bunch of rare Oliver tractors with MFWA.

When you said an "unusual" Oliver, I thought maybe you meant one that was running.

Sorry, I couldn't resist that. We had a 70 once that wasn't a bad tractor-if you could ever get it to start. That was the tractor my dad insisted on using on a feed grinder, and I don't know how many times I belted it up with a VAC Case, particularly in colder weather, just to get the dammed thing running.

When we had them put on Case 70 series PS tractors there were micro switches on the shift control valve. The switches changed the volume output of the pump on the front of the tractor.
When the 90 series tractors came out the control system was redesigned to work with the tractors factory hyd. pump.

I don't see any weights on that 1650, so I don't see that it would be over 10,000 lbs, so one strap front, and one rear would be perfectly legal. Unless the straps are light duty which they do not appear to be.

At work we where told DOT required four point tie downs. Some guys got tickets for using two chains on skid-loaders. I use four tie downs when I haul my lawn tractor or 4-wheeler.

Yep. four point tie downs over 10,000. Under that use forty if it floats your boat.
