Got the Corn Picked and checking in

Haven't been on here in forever. Figured I'd show you guys that we got all the corn off. Lots of fun with the picker breaking twice and building a new corn crib. But it worked out. This will be part of the pig food for next year. We are still small scale, loaded the crib with a the loader tractor. We will be doubling our corn area next year. We raised 5 pigs this year for butchering and to sell to make a little money back. We lose money but we have fun doing it. Dad does 95% of the work but I help as much as I can from 3 hours away. Also the last ear was really cool so I saved it. There wasn't any Indian corn around us but it turned out like this. Several ears had single kernels colored but this ear was crazy. Also a picture of my wife helping us put it in this year.

Glad you're doing it, but BE CAREFUL OF THAT OPEN PTO SHAFT!! That's a killer waiting for a little mistake. Do your family a favor and get a shield on it.

I was thinking about putting a piece of PVC pipe on it to make it a little safe. Think that would help? I am very careful of that shaft, Ive read to many stories on here of accidents.

What kind of left-handed picker is that? My neighbor had a left-handed Co-op picker. Maybe it was made by the same company?

Nice harvest pics. Is there a husking bed on the picker or is it just funneled from the snapper elevator over to the wagon elevator?

Great horn toads! That musta had some kind of coveer a long time ago. Ask if someone has the owners manual on here and can sent you a parts explosion so you can fabricate something. Not anything to screw around with. Please!!!!

Very nice pictures that point to dedication and contact with the land. Please take this positively The blocks under the crib must be turned so the holes are vertical. they have near zero strength side to side. I lost the principle of the high school where I first taught from failing blocks crushing him. Jim

You're exactly right I made concrete block for 20 years almost no strength laid on its side and a piece of wood at least the size of the block should be laid across the top as uneven pressure
will make a block easier to break.Maximum Compression strength with a concrete block is gained when the pressure on both top and bottom are even.

That shaft is one of the least dangerous things on an old picker, best rules are no one else around when its running and don't get off the tractor with the PTO in gear. Most accidents happened up at the gathering chains when the picker was left running when the operator got off the tractor.

Better yet, replace them with some pier blocks, and save the building blocks for another project.
Nice pics, nice to see the better half out there helping.

I really like your photos and what you are doing. But as above, get a PTO shield before you do any more. My aunt lost her leg in a PTO accident from an unshielded shaft very similar to yours. Flight for life and a 6 week stay at a major WI hospital were involved. Don't go there. You have a nice wife and I presume children. They need you. And you want them safe. Fix the shield.

Send us pictures of what you need, maybe we have something that would work.

While I would agree that a PTO shield is a good idea, it is also true what Traditional Farmer said. He laid out two basic rules. If those rules are followed, that shaft is 100% safe!
Those rules will also keep your hand from getting caught in the picker.

I highly doubt that he will find the "proper" shield for a Co-op picker anymore. Chances are that it was a U shaped piece of sheet steel that connected to the gear box and to the front shaft tower. Not sure on that picker, but many of the long shafts on machines of that vintage telescoped and the short shaft from the tower to the tractor were solid. Thus the U shaped shield had to telescope and that is why they are missing now. They got crunched.
I'm sure something safe can be fabricated though.

The night harvest picture is wall hanger quality ! What is the planting

setup ? JD 494 no-till ?

Wow, great lights...

All ours had was 6v bulb-type lights and you could hardly see a thing if the moon was not out..!!

My neighbor's was more of an orange color. Dad borrowed it once, it did a pretty good job. I think his is still sitting out in his field rusting away.

My only comment is to just enjoy what you and your family are doing together. Half the people in the world wish they could have a life like yours just enjoying the satisfaction of being close to nature.

get some kind of shield on that pto my dad got his bib overalls wrapped up in one got his arm broke trying to get them
off that was the end of farming for him
