Positive or negative ground

Would this electric fuel pump care if it was on a vehicle with positive or negative ground? I wanted to use it on a tractor with positive ground.

I don't think I ever saw any 12 vdc positive ground systems, but I bet it will work. It is just pulsing a coil.
Chip, who has made a lot of mistakes that cost more than 18 bucks.

I installed one of a different brand last summer on a pos ground system and it would not pump. Switched system to neg ground and worked fine.

i would suspect it will work. Don't know where your going to buy one but I would check ebay first. I don't think any of them are made in the usa any more. I bought one off ebay and installed it on a older skid loader. worked fine. I needed a carb for a briggs engine. briggs wanted 50 bucks. one on ebay for 8.19 shipped to me house. Same number s briggs. ays tp shop as a whole lot of stuff for tractors and such aren't made n the usa anymore. Sad but true. just saying,

It will work.. (opinion) Based on the fact that there are red and black wires. Hold it in your hand not connected to the fuel. attach the red to ground and the black to negative batt term. If it runs, then check both wires to the pump case with a VOM to make sure they are nor internally grounded. Jim

I bought 2 of them from Auto zone I think they ran about 25.00. One guy told me they make a different one for deisal but I bought the cheaper one and it is still working 8 years later

Hello rrlund,

The short answer YES. Reversing the leads on a dc motor will reverse its rotation. I think the pump will only work with the proper polarity in one direction,

Guido.

Guido, not so fast with the motor, reverse the polarity on a stater motor (non-permanent magnet) and it will still run the same direction, as will most "wire wound field" motors. Then the fuel pump doesn't use a rotating motor anyway.

Reverse the wires like suggested. I have a hunch if it has both a black and a red wire the pump frame itself is isolated and does not serve as a grounding point.

It'll work I have a similar one on my Positive Ground AC D19 gas since the only mechanical replacement costs over $300.Just hook the wires up reverse of a Neg Grd.Be sure to put a filter
between the tank and the pump as any amount of small fine metal will destroy it.

I put one on a tractor just yesterday. Hook it up one way, it does nothing hooked the other it pumps. It doesn't sound to me like it has a motor, it just pulsates. I have them on 2 other tractors, and both of them work fine.

Like others have said if the case is isolated, wire plus and minus to the correct wires and it should work.

That type does not have a motor in the normal sense, it would best be described as a reciprocating linear DC motor. It’s simply a solenoid with the moving part inside having check valves and a return spring with some electronics to pulse the coil causing the plunger inside to pump fuel.

Hello LarrySTN,

I have not tried a starter motor, but I have reversed other dc motors by simply swapping leads. You are saying then, that FIELD wound dc motors will run the same direction? Well I learned something then.I stand corrected then. Next motor I get with field windings will prove your point, and satisfy my curiosity,

Guido.

If you were using MODERN, it would NOT show up as a NEW post, but it WOULD be bumped to the top.
