PullerQuestion

Are Torque Amplifiers allowed to be used in tractor pulls? We have a pull once a year here just strictly for fun.We don't allow any modified tractors or any thing over 60 HP 1960 and older only. All our tractors are straight transmissions but the Farmall guys have an advantage in most cases with the TA.No body says much about it and there has been nobody shot over it as of yet. It's just a question that maybe some of you guys may be familiar with.I'd appreciate any response Thanks.Ron

Our little club allows them. It's interesting to see the difference it makes. with or with out. Any tractor is better than no tractor. We pull on a 'percentage',not distance. That put all tractors on a level field. A small tractor can pull along side of a bigger one. Often the little tractor out pulls the bigger because of it pulls a higher percentage of it's wt. this year my wife's SuperC pulled 72%,wheras my 400 only pulled 61%.So Susan beat me! LOL Go for it. Have fun.

in 1960,farmall,oliver,moline,allis chalmers, all had a torque, and ford had the s.o.s,must be lots of deere guys there to complain.the cockshutt and massey guys dont complain about nothing, they just want to pull thier tractors like everyone else

We did not allow any shift on the go in our antique pulls. Felt it was more fair especially for the tractors built in 1940 or earlier. Ben

Our club allows them. Some pullers shift, some don't. We had a guy that used to pull with us that really had the thing mastered. I have seen him shift 4 times on a 250 ft pull. He was hard to beat.Others wait too long to shift and seems like it hurts more than it helps.

Rules vary by location. Some do not allow, some allow shifting once, others don't limit use. Just depends on local club or promoter rules.

we do not allow ps, but I would like that changed, if factory, let some newer tractors in they are fun not like a paint dry class, you will get an influx of new people if you go at least to mid 70s

Here in NH and also in VT it depends on whether it is an antique pull or a "farm stock" pull. The rules for the two types are very similar but at a farm stock pull more modern tractors are allowed and use of power shifts is allowed.

The pull I work no TA or anyhing like that First gear only so can be no shifting. 1955 and older, no weight classes, just plow size classes. And only 2 factory rear wheel weights. Bust be able to hook to a plow and go out and work. One hook per tractor. And this year had biggest pull in number of pullers since I started working pull about 15+ years ago.

Our club's sled has a speed monitor on it and a horn will blow if you travel too fast, which you need to throttle down then. We are also just a first gear pull.

What makes you think the JD guys were complaining? I could care less how many times you shift....just hook up and shut up!

Most pulls don't allow it. I think that defeats the original purpose of pulling. Which was, which tractor can pull more. And/or, who can operate their machine better. So to evaluate the true capabilities of the machine you should be able to use the full capabilities of the machine. STOCK. Owners of other tractors are essentially asking to compete against other machines only if the other machines tie one hand behind their back.

For the record I do not own a tractor with a TA.

Our club is 1960 and older and we have to pull in first gear but IH can use TA but only once per pull ( farm stock class). We have no horse power limit but can run 10% over on RPM. My 450 is not modified and runs 5% over and running around 65 + Hp.

With TA you have know you tractor and what it can do and read the track. I can pull the 450 down till it sounds like its done and snap TA and bring RPM up and pick up an other 3-20 feet. Some times with a TA you have to throttle back when you snap TA.

Good old pulling rules L.O.L Just go with what seems to happen round here. if you are new to a pull or with a different tractor to the norm the first year it does well and comes in the top 3 or 4. They ban it the next year by altering the rules, so it can't run anymore.

I used to love going to pulls and wanted to take part again, rather than spectate. When I heard and saw what was going on I thought why bother and now I know why pullings not doing well round here. it's the same few winning and it's like watching 10 gallon of paint dry in the cold.

The last local pull one of my customers asked if I was going. I sad no and he asked why, I just told him he'd figure it out. About 2 weeks later he said yeah I get it that pull was all old iron pre 1965 and completely boring.

If it was me I'd just have a class for the stock tractors that had a turbo in the specs from new and TA multi power or what ever, everybody else needs to have there fun to, not just the same old crowd with their I got way to much money look at me collections!!!!!!!!!.
Regards Robert

Yeah, there's a "no ta" rule 'cause those green tractors didn't have one. Always wondered why they didn't make the 6 cylinders pull one plug wire off to level the playing field.

Our club allows them. I pull a Deere and I don't have a problem with it.

Most of the pulls I go to have a rule for max hitch height, max rpm, and either a 3.5 or 4 mph speed limit. It's been my experience that a 3 or 3.5 mph speed limit and 18" high hitch evens everything out pretty well. One of the club's raised the model year to 1972 this year.

No body is complaining we have fun anyway,I was just wondering if there were any rules applying to the use of the TA tractors. They get out pulled too at times.I thank all you guys for your responses.Ron

I will not even consider watching a pull with your type of tractors and would not own any of them. The pulls I like are what you say like watching paint dry. If I did not like them I would not have been working on running a pull for around 15? years. And there will never be a turbo or anything like that in this pull. And there is no cost to a puller to pull except the fuel he uses to get there and do the pull. Number of pullers is going up every year. I HATE the hot pullers.

Is it fair to the owner of a SM Farmall to pull against a SMTA with the TA engaged to give a slower ground speed.. Keep it so it is in normal ground speed. And no shifting at any time on any tractor while hooked to sled. And straight first gear and you don't have to think about speed limits as no tractor in first gear that is combine-picker speed will travel that fast.

a factory turbo is almost 60 year old tech. do car shows allow a 50, or 60 year old car in... at least let em pull plow speed . a late 60s with a factory turbo is not a hot rod
