16 months ago I bought a $50 12 ton hydraulic jack from Car Quest. It has quit working. There is no warranty (which is my bad) so I'm asking for recommendations of what to buy as a good jack.

Thanks

When you state, won't work, do you mean won't lift, won't hold, or leaking fluid? Some of these are rather easy to fix. The cheaper ones aren't worth the effort. But $50 is fifty bucks. There should be a screw on the side of jack that a straight screwdriver will remove. Take it loose/out and see if it is full of fluid/oil. If not put some hydralic oil in it. Ya, that would be to simple. I have about 8 or 9 jacks of different tonnage. I have to admit that most are from HF and I use them a lot, trouble free. If you have to take it apart, some are made so that you have to grind the heads off the pins/bolts that hold it together. Those I don't mess with either, cheap.

if it isn't leaking repairs are not that difficult, I have done many. I assume this is a bottle jack, near the pump there should be a plug, removing it will reveal two steel balls and a spring or maybe two. one ball will likely be larger than the other, remember how you removed them, basically just make sure that everything is in place, sometimes the springs will get twisted or such. you can also pull the pump out and make sure that seal is in place also.

if you chose to purchase something new , the Torin Big Red brands are pretty decent or spend some money and by OTC , off the top of my head I cant recall which brands are made here in the states, I buy all the used american brand jacks I can get my hands on for resell and most of them I rebuild.

don't by fooled by brand names, Snap-on's are just one that comes to mind that are imported and metric and they are expensive to buy repair seals for

If you can get at the ram (where it sticks out at the top) pull it out with a vice grip or vice. Pulling it might dislodge a piece of dirt from the check valve. Jim

most jack problems are caused by air in them. There are lots of you tubes about getting it out. I have used the video tricks with success. One was a floor jack and the other was a 12 ton. Most of the trick is pumping and burping them upside down.
