Oil additives for old tractors?

Does anyone run any type of oil additive like Lucas or stp or motor honey or other similar products in your tractors? I have a farmall m and john deere b and the b smoke a little with a load and when cold and I didn't know if putting say stp in it would hurt anything? Thanks

I use Lucas oil treatment in my 4020 because it wants to use a little oil. The Lucas reduces oil consumption and there
is less smoke coming out the vent tube. I will rebuild it one of these days, but it has kept running good for the last
ten years with the Lucas keeping it alive, I guess. Its kinda how I think about baby aspirin--probably only thing
that's keeping me going! Except the Lucas thickens the oil instead of thinning the blood, so not very good analogy.

Will you just replace a quart of oil with a quart of Lucas?

(quoted from post at 19:56:19 11/12/17) Yes, except its more like two quarts for the 4020. Supposed to use 20% Lucas to 80% oil, I think.

Ok I'll give that a try on next oil change. I think it's just the valve seals leaking because it's got great oil pressure and there's no blow by. I'm hoping maybe an additive will slow it if not stop it.

What symptoms are you trying to cure? Smoking under load might just be running a little rich on the load screw. Smoking when closing the throttle or when coasting down a hill is a symptom of worn piston rings. IMHO, snake oils won't help a worn engine.

Not knowing the history of engine I would run Sea foam through it before tearing it down. I have seen engines with gummed up rings from setting and Sea Foam correct the problem.

"Smoke a little under load and when cold"

These are not modern engines and a little smoking will not cause cancer. Or indicate other problems. I like to see a little smoke.

When I got it the crankcase was filled with gas. Not sure how long he ran it like that

A mundane oil today is superior to the very best oil on the market when those tractors were built .
The only place for “snake oil” is to swell old dry worn seals and gaskets to slow down leaks .
They are old worn carbureted engines inbcold weather . If they did not smoke I would be suspicious .

Most of it is snake oil and is used where not required . I am talking about the donkeys that are always pouring some elixir into every tank they can find to ward off evil spirits etc.
A worn peice of equipment can be limped to the end of season and into the shop for proper repairs . If the problem is hard and worn seals that can be softened and swelled with chemistry .
