This was on ag-talk. A potato farmer in S Colorado posted this of the rock picker his Dad made out of a potato harvester and a dump truck. Said he picked up 700 loads on a 60 acre field. And I thought we had a lot of rocks in N.E. Iowa. The last pic. is of them harvesting potatoes. Interesting!!!---Tee

Lots of potatoes grown under circles in eastern Washington. If the land has rocks, they can't do spuds (most common alternate crops are alfalfa and corn), so field has to be "certified" for potatoes.
 
Potato growing area here in mid-Michigan. Lots of rocks harvested along with the potatoes. Harvester separates rocks from potatoes. Rocks dropped in piles for later harvesting and often end up piled up in the corners and edges of the fields. Usually collected with a front end loader, into a dump truck. Stragglers picked up with a modified potato digger with conveyor on the back. What amazes me is that the road commission hasn't grabbed on to those piles for fill under rural road construction or repair. Seems like a no-brainer to me.
 
I sold about 2500 ton of rocks out of fence lines. Many many loads went to lake shoreline contractors.

Makes you appreciate the people that put them there... they worked hard to clear land. Some I could not move with the backhoe- makes you wonder how they did it with horses.

I had a college classmate from a Maine potato farm. He claimed they had a large vacuum, kind of like a grain vac, on the conveyor belt at the potato packing house. The vac would lift the potatoes, but the rocks would stay put and roll off the end of the conveyor.

Yes, rocks are no fun!
 
unless they are crushed first using complete rocks allows what ever is on top to eventually sift through and creates a low spot in the surface, broken up cement, bricks or cinder blocks will have the same effect.
