Farmall 350 Rear Axle bearing replacement

Overhauling a Farmall 350 for my father. He has read that it is better to replace the ball bearings with roller bearings for the rear axle bearings. I am trying to find out if this is true and can it be done. Further if it can be done are the roller bearings flat or tapered?

Has anyone heard of this or have any insight? His reading comes from the story of IH/Farmall rearends started failing back in the 50s/60s which lost them the tractor race.

Thanks,
Paul

3 piece flat roller inner axle bearing. Can be done, but no longer available new or hard to find and expensive if found. Used ones found need inspected. if from tractor setting long enough the races start flaking material off. Unless really using hard a top of line roller bearing would probably last the time tractor is used. Look at 460 ETC parts for bearing number. May be listed as optional with ball bearing.

The main rear end failures where mainly in the IH/Farmal 450 not the 350s. Also do you really think your going out and run a IH 350 for hundreds of hours doing heavy field work?????

The troubles with the IH 560 was what caused IH to start to lose market share. At least that is my take on it.

Cool Thanks all!

We are not going with rollers the ball bearings are fine. I was dealing with my father as we overhaul his prize and he not getting around too well and he wanted them put in. I did find the rollers averaging in price from 120 each to 400 each.

THanks for the help!

Good call. What you were saying, in a different perspective, is that bearings in a 60 year old tractor are still good but we want to replace them due to short life. It was the later models that had the problem, none in the 350/450. If you're putting a high output Cummins in front of it then you've got an issue.
