tire chains

With your help I've decided to take the 8N to my daughters to plow snow this winter.
I have a couple of sets of truck chains that I am making fit, I read here that a center row of links is needed to keep the cross bars on the lugs, is it really that important? Pictures would help.
TIA

I have chains for or on 6 vehicles.
Only one set has the rings in the middle, the rest are the normal cross link style.
Really can't say I see a difference from one to the other.
Yes the chains do settle between the lugs over time but unless your tires are near new there will still be plenty left sticking out to bite in for you.

I have two sets of tractor chains I use. Both have the cross links to keep chains on top of lugs. On ice or hard packed snow, you want the chains to
stay on top of lugs. When your chains get stuck behind the lugs, they are not near as effective. Now going down the road with them, that's another
story.

Tire chains that can't roll will wear in one spot and can loose their bite, but in following years the chains can be installed with the opposite side out for a second wear side. The ring tire chains and the twisted link chains are more expensive, but they seem to wear evenly and IMHO have improved bite on ice because the links are higher than the tire lugs.

I have good luck with ladder chains with cross links every other link on the side chains.

If you have any real amount of now and ice, get double ring chains. Ladder style only work if the tires are nearly bald IME.

I think the effect you're going for is the "duo-grip" style at the link below. That may be a bit problematic with truck tire chains, since the extra links will effectively make the chains narrower and I suspect they're pretty narrow to begin with.
Tractor tire chain styles

Just run them a little loose they will
flop to a new position every
revolution. I have this set up on one
of my tractors and they go suprisingly
well. Tires are about 80% and no
trouble at all

last year, I bought a set of Trygg diamond chains from Labonville for my UTV, better than any ladder chains I have ever owned
