I have a friend who is getting on in years, has been working on a 1939 H Farmall.
He was asking if I was interested in purchasing it, since he no longer can work on it.
What are your thoughts on these early H's, I am not that familiar with them. He has
done a lot of work on the engine, transmission, wheel bearings, starter, etc. About
all that is left is to paint it. Starts and runs great. I am thinking I might buy
it and finish it and let him drive it around and at parades. Any comments would be
appreciated.

The way you describe it, there cannot be much wrong with it. Letting this gentleman use it would be a generous idea. Like it!

Thanks, that is what I was thinking, he would love to drive it again.
Just needs to be painted, not my favorite thing, but can do it.

Dad's first tractor was an H.In my opinion that was a durable drive train and engine. With a good paint job it will look pretty snappy and you will enjoy seeing that gentleman drive it. My 2 cents.

Once you buy it, you are responsible for storing it, maintaining it, repairing it, and you'll probably paint it. You would probably be better off painting it, at no charge, and giving it back to him.

The H really didn't change much during its production run from 1939 through 1952. I have a 1941 and a 1951 and they're pretty much like two peas in a pod. I may be wrong, but I believe the first year or two the PTO shaft was different.

Loren, you may want to go back and read the whole original post.

i have an h, its a nimble tractor compared to my 3 m farmalls. in 50 years, it will still be a nimble chore tractor. i think your friend will be tickled pink if you bought it and finished it and let him drive it in parades. go for it!!!!

To buy it and finish it then let him drive it sounds like a wonderful thing to do for a friend! Watch out, you get an IH and you might start throwing rocks at those Deeres. Lol! Tell us about your green ones, pretty sure that is where your name came from.

(quoted from post at 15:30:02 10/20/17) Showcrop-It says "any comments would be appreciated."

Yeah, but it was really an odd comment. I'm pretty sure anyone considering buying a tractor is expecting to own it after buying, and that includes some "hidden" costs that only a very young person would fail to recognize. I've never been afraid of owning just one more.
