Brake fluid

I needed new brake fluid for my brake job. I purchased dot four, because it said it was rated for a higher temperature. I thought that would be good. I went to fill the master cylinder, the cap said use only dot 3. Will dot 4 work or should I go and buy dot 3? Any thoughts. Stan

4 is OK and about all I use...

Just don't use DOT 5. DOT 3,4 and 5.1 are all glycol based. DOT 5 is silicone based and is just plain bad news. Also don't use LHM fluid, which is typically used on some european stuff, as well as some euro built CNH tractors.

You can use DOT 4 mixed in a DOT 3 system.

I would not use DOT 3 in a DOT 4 system as in may boil.
DOT 5 is a completely different base so it can not be used.
