another small tractor question

Hypothetical question here. If a person was looking for a tractor for a big garden. Something about one or two sizes bigger then a 1450/1650 Cub Cadet or 300/400 series JD. Had a budget of about $5,000 what would be some good models to look for? Still looking for a tractor for my garden looked at a B Allis. Seems like it would have worked, if it had been taken better care of. Looked at a Farmall H price was right but too big for what I want to do. However could put a 3pt on it and use mounted equip. Out of ideas guys . need help. Thanks, Sod Buster.

Delta's suggestions are good. A International 340, 300, 350. are also good. Oliver S55 or 550 are very well thought of. Look at
tires and wear on the clutch pedal to assist in determining how far down the road it has gone. Jim

I have several small tractors I use in my gardens
1)Hines H-1600 sort of a clone of an AC G only better
2)Massey Ferguson 220 26 HP compact
3)Bolens 242 24 HP built by Iseki
They work pretty well there are lots of small compacts around these days that are capable of running a 4ft tiller and some small ground engaging equipment
The Yanmars are a good choice even the so called 'Grey Market' tractors as Hoye Tractor has about anything you'd need for most of them.

i'd second the furguson 135, around here you could buy a nice one and have money left for equipment

Decide what you are going to use the tractor for
For a rotor tiller-- 3-point and a ground speed of less than 1 MPH. A creeper gear is good to have. Some with creeper gear will have a minimum ground speed of .2 MPH. Hydro-stats as well.
For row crops-- Adjustable front and rear wheel tread spacing. 40" - 60" would cover most garden row spacing. For narrow row spacing narrow rear tires, 11.2 or less.
Think of implements you plan to use, planter, cultivator etc.
Some models of Kubota from the 1970s have 3-point, minimum ground speed of 8 MPH, good range of wheel tread spacing.
Allis G like tractors are being built--

How about a Farmall Super C with fasthitch? That and some implements should cover your needs. Unless you want to rototill..

Ford 600, 800 or jubilee. Get 2
then you ain't gotta swap
implements as much! 3 point
Implements are easy to find and
buy,and use. We love our fords in
the garden.

I use a Farmall 100 and 140 exclusively for garden work they can not be beat as far as garden work. I could do with just one BUT I put rolling cultivators on the 140 and was told once I got them set up right I would not take them off and they were RIGHT....

The last 5 years are so I mulch everything except corn/peas do little cultivating of the garden. The most fun a guy can have is cultivating corn/peas with a offset Farmall in my opinion.

An Oliver 550 is good one. Although I agree with Dean, an older Kubota like a B7100 in good condition and serviced is hard to beat -- nice to have that hydro vs. gear.

A B allis is not that hard to put a 3ph on but ours has the smaller pto so you would need an adaptor. My brother inlaw uses an IH A but he hates changing the equipment back and forth. A massey 30 would be a small tractor with factory 3ph.

I just happen to have what you need. It is a John Deere 855. 24 hp diesel, hydrostat, power steering, 3pt. Everything works like it should, all gauges, all lights, and all controls. Comes with a 72 inch mid-mount mower. Currently listed on E-bay, but for sale locally. It will handle a 5 ft. rototiller easily.

I have to go with Hobo on this one. If I was gonna do it,I'd want an offset IH. Oliver made one,but they're way too valuable a collector item to ever get one dirty even if you could find one.

Cant rototill with it, but my TO30 is an excellent garden tractor for me. Adjustable wheelbase, good 3pt hitch for my disk, hippers, blade, box. Pulls good and I don't need much speed.

Ford 600, 800, 2000, 3000
(lots for sale, and parts are cheap and everywhere)

plus,

a little offset Farmall with the cultivator setup....like said, just leave them on always.

with careful shopping, your $5000 should buy them both.

I live in an area of endless fruit and vegetable small farms with roadside stands. Very common setup...a Ford with the 3-point hitch to work the ground and a little Farmall Super A with cultivators to tend to the weeds.
(These people take what they are doing very seriously and make good money........and I have never seen any of them use a rototiller)
