JD Steering Motor

Anyone ever pulled the steering motor piston out from under the front end of a JD 4230? I'm about to tackle it. I know the side rail has to come off. I have a front end loader on mine that will need to be removed. Not looking forward to the job but oil is pouring out of it so it's got to be done.

If the piston caps are what's leaking...you can prop the tractor up under the engine oil pan so it won't sag...and pull the side frame on that side and re-seal the caps. Put it back together and do the other side if you must.

I don't usually remove the fuel tank or radiator or much else besides loader frames front plates ahead of radiator and battery box.

Yes. That appears to be what is leaking. No problems with the steering. Just the leak. And your right. I was told to put a jack under the oil pan to hold every thing inline when I remove the rail. Only the left side leaking.

Yabbut, when you seal up the one side,it will add pressure to the other side so it will start to leak too!.....................................gtm

If it is steering okay and a cap is leaking...there is a very strong chance that the housing is cracked in the area of the cap retaining snap ring,,this can happen when the front wheel hit some thing solid,,tile blow out, a hidden stump...ect. It is rare for a cap to leak other wise..look at it close..

I've done several plug re-seals over the years..loader tractors and MFWD tractors seem most likely to blow the plug O"rings. In fact the last one I did(several years ago) was a 4230 loader tractor.

rare compared to PTO seals or loadshaft seals for sure...but common enough.
