Had A weird thought.

I was thinking today that a Farmall H sold new for about $800 or there abouts. Adjusted for inflation thats comes out to $16k-$17k. You know at the time that must have been a small fortune. But for those who bought one new did the maintenance and still have them, that turned out to be one heck of a deal. I was in the dealership the other day looking at "garden tractors." It just got me thinking if these tractors today will still be working in 40-50-60 years from now. They sure know how to charge for them though. For $16k buys a tractor that would struggle to pull 1-16. Any way just a random thought

I'd say the answer is almost 100% no. One factor is
we live in a highly disposable world. Another is lack
of respect of a dollar not to mention a hard earned
dollar. Also a lot of people don't look at assets as
their livelihoods. Mass production with low quality
parts as to make for an affordable price also plays a
major role. Like right now I have a craftsman
mower. Descent mower does a pretty good job. I'm
having some transmission issues with it. A new
transmission is several hundred dollars more than I
paid for it. By the time I take my purchase price and
add the repair cost I'm time and money ahead to go
buy a new big better faster mower. Motor still runs
good. Deck still cuts good but it's either leave it
around taking up shed space deal with the hassle of
trying to sell it or junk it.

The tractors sold today will not be working even 30 years from now. The Companies have built in computer controls that allow the company to have built in obsolescence. In 10-20 years the OEM manufacture will just stop supporting the electronics for the tractor but will still enforce their patients. So they will not have the part but they will keep anyone else from making it either.

Some of the computers on the JD 9400 combine are no longer available. Know a fellow that had to search for a year for the one to fit his combine. He Sold it ASAP. He replaced it with a low houred JD 7720. No computers!!!!

I have the original bill of sale for my dads SMTA purchased in 09-09-1955 for $2400 from the IH dealer.
