Trailer battery wiring question...

We run a big pumpkin patch, and after many customer requests, we have finally purchased (Dirt cheap Luckily), a used wheel chair lift for one of our pumpkin patch wagons. We installed a battery on the wagon to run the unit, but need to keep it charged from the tractor. All of our tractors we wire with a power plug in the rear for electric valves and lights on implements, but they are not intended for 40-50amps...

The question I have is...

How can we wire from the tractor -to charge the battery on the wagon, without a major draw through the wire every time the hydraulic unit is cycled? In other words, I only want to draw from the wagon battery to run hydraulic unit, and charge from tractor.

I have seen some battery disconects that tie into ignition, but i dont plan on shutting down every time we cycle the unit.

Is there a device for trailers, such as trailers with hydraulic dump, to limit amount of current from lead battery?

Thanks for any ideas..

Really easy go to a truck parts place and get a 10 or 20 am breaker. Put it in the line and soon as you hit the lift for any time the draw will click the breaker then latter it will reset and charge the battery. Put the breaker in the charge line before you rear or work battery. Have all my dump trailers and winch set up like this. Never draws the tractor battery down and will charge the battery all time it is running.

Great.. thanks... knew there had to be something.. just never had any experience working on trailers...

A very good idea. Also put a BIGGER or two in parallel batteries under the wagon. You want deep cycle. My stars a lift can't use that much power.

To address the same problem on dump trailers I've installed a normally closed relay that opens when motor is activated. If you don't know how to wire the relay,we can walk you through it.
