fuel shut-off valve

want to install one on my riding mower. should I put it before or after the inline fuel filter? yes there is a fuel pump.

I would put it before the filter, especially if the line comes from the bottom of the tank.

But access convenience is also a factor.

Speaking of fuel shut-off valves, why aren't they putting on valves that also have a position for draining the fuel tank? Maybe with a little hose attached (or attachable) to put it back in your gas can. Getting the fuel out for the winter on summer-use engines is a must these days, and not having to remove the fuel line would sure be a lot easier.

i would use the type that goes right into the tank outlet.has screen assembly on it inside tank also, then you can do away with the inline filter. is your tank plastic or metal unit. let me know what on and can give you part number talking about

If you have a fuel shut off valve, one can shut off the valve and allow the engine to run until it dies. This pulls fuel from the carburetor bowl which is most susceptible to damage during storage. I don't ever drain fuel from the tank for over winter/summer storage and have not had problems. Note, without an electric fuel pump or gravity flow system, it may/will take some cranking to fill the bowl with fuel before the engine will start.

I use one of these fuel shut offs on all mowers and log splitter. If it's gravity flow put it between tank and fuel filter and if it has fuel pump I put it between fuel filter and fuel pump.

In the shop where I work, we install them before the fuel filter. That way changing the fuel filter will be much less messy.

Not to hijack this thread, but the reason they don't come with a tank drain is twofold: 1. Its nearly impossible to convince some people to use a shutoff. (And some of those who do will turn it and forget where it is/how it works, and you have to show them again every year.) I put them on, show the customer where it is and how to use it and when I see the machine again, the valve is on and the gas is in the oil all over again, just like last time.

And 2. If they did have a drain for the tank, some idiot would be hopping mad when he accidentally drained one all over his fresh painted garage floor.
