HEre is a little different tractor Pull

Used to be a fellow displayed an old steam engine at our local county fair. At the end of the pulls he'd hook on and proceed to drag the sled all the way out and around the track.

Hi Philip You forgot to add the third thing " what ever it has for a variable speed shift on the move transmission" Anything like that helps in tractor pulling rules permitting. It's just like a dual power on fords or Multi power on Masseys, or other brand name shifts. That clutch less shift can give you a pretty good advantage when the weight comes up, you start in high range and you can downshift 1/2 a gear or what ever without using the clutch to keep the power on and go slower to keep moving hopefully.
Regards Robert

What advantage is there to starting out in a higher gear. You will get down the track quicker but I thought that it was just the distance you pulled that counted (and weight)???

It is how far you pull, but distance is determined by traction. Speed allows you to gain MOMENTUM. which reduces your need for traction so you go further before you spin out.
