1947 @N starting problems

I have a Ford 2N that has everything pertaining to the electrical ignition and Carburetor that all is new. I took it to an implement dealer and they repaired the distributor. It started right up when I picked it up and ran fine. the next day it was doing the same thing it would not start with the carburetor flooding, any suggestions?

Are you sure the carb is flooding?

After a failed, choke assisted start, some fuel dripping from the carb is normal. If the drip stops after a few seconds, it is not flooding.

If the fuel begins to drip soon after the fuel valve is opened, or the engine loads up, begins to blubber and make black smoke, then you have a flooding carb.

Trash in the needle/seat is the most common cause. Sometimes you can pull the drain plug on the bowl, let the carb drain, turn on the fuel valve and flush out the trash. But if the tank is contaminated with rust or trash, it will get back in there. Only takes a tiny piece to hold the valve off the seat. Be sure the screen is in the sediment bowl. Inline filters are not recommended for gravity flow systems. If you do add an inline filter, be sure it is a screen type, not pleated paper.

Other reasons can be a defective needle/seat, loose seat, float level set too high, sunk float, or bent/binding float. Just because it's new doesn't mean there is not a problem with the carb. They are aftermarket, anything is possible.

But, you could have other problems. Have you cleaned the air filter element? There is a mesh element inside the canister, it is often overlooked. Also check for mud dobber nests, mouse nests.

If this is still a 6 volt, everything needs to be right for it to start. The battery cables need to be size 0 or larger, not the skinny ones from the auto supply. The starter needs to be healthy and in good repair. If the bushings are worn, it will draw too much amperage, robbing the coil of enough voltage to fire while cranking. The battery and generator need to be in good order. A slightly discharged battery, dirty cables, faulty generator will cause starting and running problems.

As for the distributor and other electrical components, they are all aftermarket. Today's points and condensers are poor quality. Even though new, they can still be the problem.

Finally, have you checked the compression? A tired engine will not start easily, no matter how well tuned.

Fire is getting to all the plugs, new key switch, spark plugs are wet, letting it dry out, going to put another spare set it, this tractor has been a headache since day one.

Tractor tried to start, starter bendix spun out after a few cranks, new starter, new starter drive, 12 volt. Ceases to amaze me when I
picked it up from the dealer it started immediately. I think it is time to sell it and just give up. This tractor has been a headache but my
grandson wanted me to have it. But if i had know the issues with this tractor I would have bought a diesel.

I have a 2N that has been in the family for 73 years so I know what they can do. The wrong manifold will do that. Orignal cracked and Dad got a TSC manifold and for years had starting problems. Found a good Ford mechanic and he saw what the problem was in that the manifold was made with to long a throt, got me the corect manifold and starting problems went away for years. Got a starting and rinning problem a few years ago and it was that voltage reduser was kicking out Bypassed it and then the problem went away. Also have a 9N and both on 6 volt. I would convert back to 6 volt the way it is supposed to be. Only reason to convert to 12 is somebody did not want to fix what was needed. Having starting problems now but the fuell shut off is not shuting off and draining tank out carb.

on't use the choke

After letting the tractor with the plugs removed to dry out. I put a set of champion plugs in it and it started right up, I find the suggested plugs sold on Yesterday and Tractor supply are worthless, new carburetor, new manifold, air cleaner cleaned. This tractor is spotless, it might start this evening at least I hope so. All electrical components have been replaced, it does have a 12 volt system and the engine turns over fast as compared to 6 volt. I will be looking for some better plugs but for now the Champion plugs will do for now. If I could find an element breather system I would for I have never been a fan of oil bathe system.
