It Is Amazing

We had such a bad spring with rain nearly everyday that our corn planting was delayed until June. As a result a lot of the corn did not even germinate. I had just about given the crop up as a loss but along came one of my sons who wants to make a corn maze.

Now to say that I was skeptical would be an understatement, I just did not believe it would work but in spite of my misgivings I gave him a field of poor looking corn to play with. He jumped right in and went to planning the maze and enlisted the support of a lot of other promoters. The result, several hundred people have already paid to wander through one of my corn fields and enjoy the pleasant hayride which is part of the experience.

Is it working? I would guess that it is as several people have been back for a second visit and several schools are using the maze as a place for a field trip. I do not get any revenue from the maze but the corn has rebounded and I should harvest a decent crop and that was all that I had ever wanted. Happy farming.

A corn maze was a popular attraction here a few years back. Then one day late in the fall, when the corn was dry, a dumb jerk teenager thought it would be funny to pull out his lighter, and light the corn on fire after a group of kids had gone in. That pretty well ended corn maze experience for now.

Wonder why it is human nature for a small percent of us humans want to destroy stuff?

Always been that way, stories I heard from dad way back was really the same thing.

Outfit here has a big corn maze every year. they map it out with computer and GPS. then spray roundup on the passages(NONGMO corn). They even know the pattern before its planted. Thousands of people go through it. Some even come for a hundred miles.Best income produceing field on the place.

I have a friend that lives close to Chicago. He grows produce and such. He put in his first corn maze 9-10 years ago. He is now averaging 175-200K people through it each season. $5 per head. It costs him $35K to get it planted. Fellow that does it uses a computer to make the design and then it is down loaded to a special planter. It plants on 15 inch rows, alternated and with automatic shut offs. He grows a taller corn that has large stalks. His population is around 40,000.

He told me the corn maze was the only thing keeping him going as produce price has dropped or moved to organic. His ground is river bottoms and has every weed known to man so organic would be a tough row to hoe there. LOL
