New PTO Shaft

I bought a new PTO shaft for my flail mower, from the local tractor supplier. I said I wanted one with a square solid shaft. The guy said he only sells metric ones, and they are hollow tubes. It is a cat 4, and seems rather strong. Something to do with the Clinton presidency administration making metric the only ones the US can sell. Anyone know about that? Stan

I'll call BS on the metric deal. Weasler still builds the square/imperial PTO shafts. There is nothing wrong with the metric European ones. The tube is hollow, but it is bigger diameter category to category. They are also lighter in weight which can be helpful sometimes. And are easier to custom fit the length is need be.

The fed law used to be,(I have no idea if it has been changed) if you sold to the government it had to be metric specs. The only industry that I know of that told them to take a hike was the cement block industry. They claimed there was not enough profit in a block to pay for new patterns.

Sounds like BS to me, but metric is the way to go, the whole rest of the world is metric, if we want to do business with them we better get with it.

You might try looking for one with a RECTANGULAR shaft, as SQUARE PTO shafts are as rare as hen's teeth.

They are made rectangular so that clueless people can't assemble them with the end yokes "out of phase".

Lots of places (your local DEERE dealer, even) has access to the Weasler catalog, and other places are dealers for G&G, or others.

Baum Iron in Omaha will sell you virtually ANY parts or configuration of PTO, American or metric, that you might need to replace.

Surplus Center (also in Nebraska) has a WIDE variety of PTO shafts in stock.

I think you will find the "square" ones are 1 by 1 1/8, Tractor Supply has them. Different sized yokes, so measure before buying if you want to keep all the bearings the same size.

And if the countrys weant to do bussiness with us they will use our measurements and not the silly milly metric stuf. All we have to do is put our foot down and stand up for ourselves.
