International Harvester Super C

Can someone help me, we just bought a very old International Harvester Super C and the previous owner never changed the oil. He had it for 2 years. Does anyone know what type of oil should be used in the old tractor?

I'd start off adding a good oil flushing additive, you can get at any good auto supply. Then change the filter and go to a good 15w40 oil. Watch the gage closely to be sure you are maintaining good oil pressure, and change oil and filter again after 15-2o hours. Should be ok after that to go to regular intervals.

I second what Paul said. My Super C needed an oil change too and still low oil pressure on the gauge after changing the oil. I dropped the oil
pan, removed the oil pump, and cleaned and replaced the oil pump gasket. Everything was re-assembled and the oil pressure came up to higher than
expected level.

A super C is not very old, it's younger than me! Using it for 2 years without changing the oil is
not a problem if there weren't many hours put on it. I run our C 4-5 years between oil changes, but
it doesn't get used much, and never in cold weather, I see no problem with that. I use 15-40 oil and
have good pressure after fixing the oil pump gasket too!

Add a quart of diesel fuel andlet idle for 10-15 min. Then dump. If extremely bad,you can use 50% diesel,50% new oil. Remove the oil filter so it doesn't plug up with sludge and crap.. let idle for a bit, then drain and fill with new oil.I just did this with a 400 that I drained out 3 gallons of gray goo with chunks.Acctually I ran the mixture through TWICE. I recommend/use 15-40 fleet diesel in EVERYTHING.Motorcycles,lawnmowers,(10)(gas/diesel)tractors,pickups/trucks.......One oil for everything. One oil on the place keeps things simple.

Any older gas tractor I use straight 30 weight motor oil. A wise old farmer & mechanic told me years ago to use 30 weight oil cause the multi grade oil is not the best to put in them.

I have had to fix several IHC models with low oil pressure. I don't know why they used that pot metal oil pump cover ? Can you still get the parts new from case/ih ?

Yeah, they hardly lasted 50 or 60 years...

The real answer about the oil is: IT IS NOT THAT IMPORTANT.

If you use a good quality oil, any commonly available engine oil will work as good as any other. Straight 30, 10w30, 10w40, 15w40...

Just stay away from the light oils meant for close-tolerance car engines, like the 0w's and 5w's. Those are too thin.
