Just when things were getting normal around here from my mowing season ending. The wife is talking about another car. We have a 08 ford edge with 67,000 miles, and has nothing wrong with it, but in a few years it will start showing it's age. We looked at a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 15,000 miles. Out the door for 27,000. To me that is a bunch of money. Don't know if I am going to win this one or not. Anyone have a Jeep Cherokee? How do you like it? Stan

I don't know about the one's today, but 20 years ago the wife took our Olds in to the dealer to get it worked on. They loaned her a Jeep Cherokee. She liked the Cherokee so much better then the Olds she traded. Their book keeper who was our neighbor also was driving a Jeep Cherokee.

Jeeps are the number one vehicle I see sitting along the road broke down. By a large margin.

I had a 2012 for the wife, she put 120k miles on it and did absolutely nothing to it other than oil changes, a few air filters and sets of tires. It was only a Laredo X but had quite a few options and comforts. She was going to get another one but we decided to downsize a little and save a few bucks and bought an Accord v6, another great vehicle with almost 60k miles so far.

I have several friends that have had Jeeps. It seems pretty hit or miss on how well they do with them. Two of them where total problems. In the shop more than on the road. One was great and lasted for over 150K without any issues.

I know the JD Powers reports/reviews are not favorable on the quality of Jeeps in general. They usually do not rate very well, 2-3s out of a possible 5.

I have owned one Jeep and the quality was not there. I do not think that is a very good deal, at least around here. Maybe in CA it is but not here.

Jeep is consistently in the bottom 5, wen you look at the reliability lists. It seems to battle it out with Fiats for that coveted "least reliable" award. Stylish yes, reliable NO!

Only thing I see Jeep about a Cherokee, is the name. Don't think it is really anything more than another SUV. I understand they can be a nice ride. My wife has a Jeep Wrangler, which is what you think of when you hear the name "Jeep" . It rides rough, and goes through deep snow real well, not things you are looking for, lol. She loves it, and it has been trouble free so far.

Your post refers to both a "Cherokee" and a "Grand Cherokee" which are very different vehicles. The Cherokee is car-based, front- or all-wheel drive compact SUV while the Grand Cherokee is larger and a more high-end vehicle. I had a Cherokee as a rental vehicle a year or so ago and wasn't impressed by it. It had a 9-speed transmission but in hundreds of miles of driving, mostly on the highway, I saw it in 9th gear exactly one time which was on a long downhill grade at 75 mph. I've read that this transmission has been a problem area for the Cherokee.

Wife looked at a Cherokee (not grand: not sure from post which you are looking at).
I am on the taller side (6'2") and did not like how squished I felt in the driver's seat. She is shorter and did not have good vision over the slope of the hood.
We passed.

I bought a 1997 Buick Park Avenue 6 years ago with 8k miles on it. It now has 94k on it but has been a great car. This year we bought a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander with 0 miles but kept the Buick. Both of them get to share the load. That plus two trucks are enough for a 2 person family I suppose.

I bought a red 4 door, I6 engine, automatic, 2wd, back in '89 before SUVs got popular and Suburbans were about all that could be had. It was for my wife but I drove it on occasions. Cramped for me being a tall guy. As I remember it only had one problem and that was the radiator reservoir tank was over on a shelf near the firewall and made of plastic. The seam cracked after a few years and it required replacing. The cars are pricy and they still are. Don't know why other than they know they can get it so they kick the price up.

for what it's worth, my wife is on her 2nd Grand Cherokee, about 20,000 miles on this one, the first one didn't have much more. No issues except the transmission shifts funny, dealer says that the way they are. My son has had two with the diesel, been real happy.

Always a gamble with anything anymore.

If she's not happy with a 9 year old Ford with only 67K on it, she's really not going to like the new Jeep.

I have a friend that has owned Jeeps for over 30 years. Last one he bought he only kept for 6 months. Sold it and got a used pre Fiat one. He's happy now.

I don't know about the Cherokee, but when we were looking for something a few weeks ago,we looked at a Liberty. I did a search, came up to Edmonds I think it was. Something like 105 comments on them. Most were good, but every one of them said there was a huge problem with the window regulators. One guy said he had his replaced 16 times.

(quoted from post at 09:17:51 09/16/17) Guy down here has a Fiat. Local wrecker drivers love him.
eminded me of old rural rout mail carrier. He said, " my VW Rabbit has over 140,000 miles on it.....most of those hanging off the tow truck!"

I'm sure they do Billy. Could never figure out why anyone would buy one. Up here you can pay as much for those as you can for a Honda Civic .... so if you want a smaller car, the Fiat dealerships must have some great sales persons on their staff.

We bought two new ones in the 90s. I have no interest in ever owning another, but that was 18 years ago. The first one was an assume 4 wheel drive vehicle. The second wasn't anything like the first. The 99s engine puked at about 160 k.

245,000 mi on grand cherokee with no engine or transmission problems, I-6 engine not made after '05. Regular oil changes & maintenance. Front axle seal failure @ 180,000 . Think newer models may have better build quality. Keep window controls dry. Check car value on website like Edmonds or other so salesman doesn't fleece you on price. More of these sold in snow country.

My wife has a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and she loves it. It will go through any amount of snow. It is a great winter vehicle. I don't care for the very rough ride, cramped driver position and high maintenance costs. I have talked about replacing it with something newer but she is having none of it. She loves her Jeep.

Our family had some grand Cherokees in the past 1996 and 1999 ? not positive of the years. Best thing ever was when we got rid of them and got Honda's !!!! Crv , pilot ,Hrv and I have a
Fit.
The Honda's have held up the best for us by far ! I would not look at anything else except maybe a Toyota.

run jeep wrangler rhd unit here on mail route, would not have any other vehicle for that. for personal vehicle no. we get 200,000.00 in about five years then start over, only real major issues is tires and brakes about every 3-4months. but i would go different series for personal vehicle.

We have learned if we see him on the side of the road.Just pick him up and take him home. Don't say a word. He has heard all the jokes before.

Seems to me that you have lots of life left in the Ford. With 67,000 miles on it, it is barely broken in. Why would you or your wife want to get rid of such a low mileage car? Most of the cars in the 3 to 4 year old range around here have 100,000 miles or more on them. Sounds like the wife is just tired of it. My youngest/newest car has 160,000 miles on it. I would be tickled to death to have a car with that few miles on it!

Wife is presently driving a 2007 grand Cherokee. It has just under120k on it. Since owning it I have replaced a battery, alternator, electric cooling system fan, muffler, ball joints, and blend door for the heat and air. Most have been normal things I would not say I have had any more problems with it than any other vehicle I have owned. One thing I do like is the comfort and ride. Also good in the snow. From what I understand the drive line was designed by Mercedes. That being said I think when this one is spent we will probably get a smaller suv as our daughter is getting older and we don't need such a big suv. Will probably look at Toyota, Honda, Subaru and such.

Wife is driving a 2015 Grand Cherokee now just 30,000 miles on it with zero problems. Just oil and filter changes. Was driving a 2011 before that and had a couple of factory recalls that were taken care of by the dealer and hade no other problems had 45,000 miles on it. They seem to get around in snow and ice very well.

The company owned 2 2014 Grand Cherokees. One has had the dash panel replaced a couple times but it still keeps "blacking out" for no apparent reason. When it blacks out you have no idea how fast you are going or how much fuel you have. Park it for half an hour and everything works again. It has about 45K on it.

The other one gets abused horribly. The owner actually takes it off pavement and drives on gravel roads. Some times he even drives it in his pasture to check on his property. It has had the rear end and transfer case replaced and has had several small electronic items that the dealer can repair. It has about 80K on it.

Both are identical Grand Cherokees with the 3.6 V6 engine instead of the V8 option. Neither will be replaced with a Jeep.

Or anything else Chrysler builds.

True that. The best Chrysler I ever owned was a K-Car - it been down hill since.

I've had several Grand Cherokees in the early to mid-2000's. Wife loved them. Then the prices got up there and we got a 2006 Saturn. Not a bad car, had zero problems. Got rid of that and she has a 2014 Honda CRV. Loves it. Better gas mileage than a Grand Cherokee. My 2 daughters have had 4 GC's between them, including a brand new one. The biggest complaint I have about the 2015 is the paddle shifter. They should have fired the engineer who came up with that. In fact, it's been blamed for a celebrity death. Their fixes for that are just software patches (sounding warning chimes and such). Really didn't solve the problem. But it's the best car I've ever had in the snow. CRV comes close.
