Don't like leaving my tractor

I have been doing a fairly large mowing job. It is a good job for me, maybe 15 acres. Smooth adobe ground, only three rocks so far, that were imported by someone, and a lot of golf balls. Anyway I am not finished. For other reasons. I haven't worked the last two days, and I can't go back until Monday. I am leaving my tractor in the field. It's in a high end housing development, and should be ok. In the past years I have had one of the batteries stolen, out of my 5020, and one time kids poured water down the stack of my AC Model M. That took a while to figure why it didn't turn over. Has anyone of you had damage, or anything stolen from your tractors, or equipment when you left them unattended in the field? Stan

i put everything in the shed at night, never leave anything out. neighbor left his tractor out a few years ago when scrap was really high. came back the next morning, the whole rack of suitcase weights were gone off the front of the tractor.

Grandpa claimed several times someone stole as Jack, toolbox, etc off his tractor. The missing item always turned up in the disk or spring tooth when I worked summer fallow.

I have had way more trouble with people stealing gasoline from my barrel.

If it's an upscale neighborhood, then there's a good chance someone around there has security cameras. Maybe you could find some such person and see if it would be OK if you parked the tractor within sight of the camera, yet not on their property. Camera may not pick up that far at night, but at least anything happening in daylight hours would be caught. Also, if any headlights or flashlights are used at night, that would at least provide a record of when it happened and where to look for clues (info for the authorities).

In today's world, I never leave any equipment in a field. Bring everything back to my house at night. My be inconvenient sometimes but it doesn't get damaged or stolen.

Up here in central Alberta in the last two days, four guys made their way into a boat dealership compound with their four big pickup trucks at 1:00 AM in the morning, hooked up to four huge speedboats on their trailers. The boats are designed to haul numerous water skiers. I think they are simply called "ski boats" in the trade. Each one worth something like $200,000 including the trailers. Security cameras saw it all but no clue who it was of course, they're probably in a highway tractor-trailer rig right now heading wherever all that stolen stuff heads to nowadays. Unlikely they're gonna tow them down the road like they did when they left the scene of the crime. I guess everything is up for grabs nowadays regardless of the neighborhood unfortunately.

upscale neighborhood = lots of yuppie kids bored looking to vandalize and or steal to support a drug habit.
I'd stay and work all night and finish up or take it home and come back later. I'd not leave it sit out.

I would be leery of leaving anything w/o locks. The County/State mowing contractors here in Michigan leave their machines along the highway all the time. Also I see machines used by contractors that mow powerline and gas line rights of way left overnight. Usually newer JD or NH machines with Bat-wing mowers. I've never looked closely but I assume that they have locks on the access covers to the engine compartment, fuel tanks and cabs.

Overnight on a weeknight (15 hours?) is one thing, 5 or 6 days (120 - 144 hours) over a weekend is a lot more time for things to happen.

I've have seen this also, a upscale neighborhood the construction company I worked for had 3 backhoes, 1 skid steer, and 1 big air compressor onsite over the weekend. All the gages, and anything else that had glass like the cabs were smashed. They also pulled every fuse they could find out of every machine. I had to fix all that mess.

I have left my F-350 with 6.0 in a field overnight with the key in it, Not near a house but no one would steal it.

Don't leave your tractor unattended. There are too many people in this work who get a kick out of vandalism.

Ha! Some things even a thief won't touch LOL!

I've got an '02 Dodge Caravan. My neighbor says it's the only vehicle you could leave running with the doors open all day in a shopping
center parking lot and nobody would steal it. I guess he's trying to tell me something !!!

last 20 years i never leave tractors anywhere, before kids once beat all the gauges out of one of mine overnite with a hammer, the last time, it had to be kids or idiots, stole the tractor, but were too dumb to turn the fuel on so once the carb ran dry they wound the battery down trying to start it, then left it, now even on multi days on a job i haul the equipment every nite and back in the morning
