price differences

A couple of days ago I posted about thickness on 1 1/4" 14 guage machinery bushings. I was a few shy so went after some today. Menards had only 8 in stock so got them, $.79 each, went across the highway to TSC and they had 10 that I got but the price was a wopping $1.49 each or $.70 higher than Menards or the difference being what Menards would cost after sending in the rebate. TSC was close to double Menards price, see no reason to be that much as both are big national chains. And a few years ago tried at local hardware and we don't carry them, store is now out of bussiness but think it was age of owners. You go where you can get reguardless of price. Other 2 Menards in my area only had 2 in stock at each store. Till I am done I will need a extra dozen of those washers.

So after you fill out the rebate slip and mail it in, in about 4 weeks you will get you rebate that you can only redeem at Menards. So if you figure your postage and another trip, ( $2.60 gas) to Menards to spend your "savings" I have to wonder what the real price difference is? And after all Menards is gonna get that rebate money back at some point. I'v run into the same kinds of price differences with local TSC. But they are 26 miles closer than Menards. So as you said you go where you can get the parts, in the least amount of time and travel. gobble

Menards has fleecing you out of your money down to an art form. LOL So you will get maybe $5 after a mail-in rebate that will be a Menards card. So you then will go back to Menards and buys some thing with the "Rebate". That item will cost more than the $5 so you will spend more. I would also bet that while your there you will buy some other things so in the end Menards sold you more stuff because of their rebate.

Personally I rarely shop at Menards. The main reason is I absolutely hate how they arrange their stores. Finding anything is a treasure hunt type of thing.

Example: They do not put all the hardware stuff together. Roofing nails will be next to shingles, concrete anchors with the sack create, and etc. Some flash lights will be with other lights BUT some will be over in the electrical stuff with different lights. Then they switch them around form time to time. ARRRRGGGGGG!!!!! I like these magnetic LED rechargeable lights they have. They are cheaper $12 or so. They work well and are reasonable enough that you are not out much when you forget one on the bottom of a car or run over one. So I buy 2-3 a year. They are NEVER in the same place. The last time Menards store employees could not even find them. I had one of the old boxes. The bar code showed they had 10 of them in stock. Not a single employee could find them.

So the majority of the time I am so mad I walk out frustrated and do not go back for another year or two.

What Menards do you shop at? I have 2 nearby and they have all their hardware stuff in the same area.
Flashlights are all in one spot.

As for the rebates I think they aren't a bad deal, yes you have to spend them at their store but chances are I need something anyway and I don't consider getting a few bucks off my bill getting fleeced at all.
Their prices are fair even when they don't have rebates going.

We have TSC stores , and yes their prices are often higher , but they do stock things that other stores don't or won't. I end up buying most hardware at the feed store. Feed store carries a reasonable line of plumbing , electrical, as well as fasteners.

We have an excellent Runnings in our town and I buy everything I can from them even if it is higher price. In my world, Menards is known for low quality, especially in hardware items. I bought some Stanley hinges there and they lasted a couple of weeks. I replaced them with Stanley hinges from Ace Hardware and they have lasted for years. The Menards hinges were much lighter. You talk to suppliers and Menards is big enough that they demand a certain price and suppliers do what they have to so they can get the price down. I have gotten some excellent 2x10s at Menards and I have gotten some really bad lumber. One reason I buy at Runnings is that they have a lot of stuff I need that Menards doesn't. I appreciate Runnings and want to keep them around. If you keep track of which bushings you put where, you can run your own quality check. Maybe they are identical, maybe not, even if the label is the same. My nephew managed a Menards and they are not a nice bunch to work for. They own you and drive you into the ground. Their gross margins were the envy of any other business. It isn't all due to buying better, slick marketing is a large part of it.

Look at the size of the TSC store vs. the Menards store. Look at the size of their respective parking lots. Look at how many cars are in their respective parking lots. Look at how many people are in the stores.

Menards does a whole lot more business than TSC, and as such can get by with a much smaller profit margin. If TSC tried to match prices and go toe to toe with Menards they would be out of business in a month.

Yesterday I seeded a little lawn grass. Needed something to shade the ground, went to a nearby farm where I bought straw before, he was not home and hardly any in his mow. So I went to Rural King. They have a semi cargo trailer full. Just $7.50 a bale (small squares) with tax, (choke, choke). At first I wasn't going to buy any, then thought, well, I don't need much, and.... they have to pay their help and keep the doors open.

FEW DAYS BACK I NEEDED A CARB FOR MY 3 1/2 HORSE BRIGGS. CHECKED BRIGGS SIT IT WAS 50 BUCKS. CHECKED EBAY AND THERE WERE SEVERAL ON THERE ALL WITH THE SAMES BRIGGS NUMBERS. BOUGHT ONE FOR 8.19 SHIPPED TO MY HOUSE. IM SURE THERE ALL MADE IN CHINA NOWADAYS. IT DOES PAY TO SHOP AROUND. THESE PARTS STORES ARE MAKING ALOT OF MONEY OFF THESE PEOPLE IN CHINA. I BUY ALL MY NUTS, BOLTS.WASHERS FROM MY LOCAL ORCHELNS STORE. THEY SELL THEM BUY THE POUND. AWAYS HAS A GOOD SELECTION. HAVENT HAD MUCH LUCK WITH TSC AS THEY TEND TO BE A LOT HIGHER. NEXT TIME YOU GO INTO THESE STORES LOOK ON THE PACKAGE AND SEE WHERE THERE MADE AS YOU WILL FIND MOST STUFF IS MADE IN CHINA OR MIDDLE EAST AND YES VIET NAM IS NOW CASHING IN. REALLY SAD ITS GOTTEN THIS WAY BUT IT IS REALITY.

We have a Runnings nearby. I try to shop there, often waiting for a sale so I can get larger items for close to the Lowes price. Last few years I've noticed that much of runnings smaller items are the same exact items that Walmart sells for half the price. I still like having them around and try to wait to pick up bigger items from them, but I'm probably going to start putting less effort into it.

I have purchased a new dishwasher, wash machine, and french door refrigerator from Menards all with their 11 % rebates. Things you get with the rebates also are not charged sales tax as it was paid on the first purchase. Amounts to a lot more than a gallon of fuel. The initial price is usually several percent below the other box stores as well.

Needed some bolts in a hurry and got them at the local Co-op....$1.49 apiece. Next day made a trip to Menards for something else and checked the same bolt price...$.17 each. Co-op loves to stick their customers on hardware, oil and hydraulic hoses.

Geez, must be a difference the way certain Menards are run. Have friends working longer than 5 years there and like the company. Both are managers in their areas, carpeting, etc. and hardware.

I can't comment on Menard's since they do not have a store in my area. We only have TSC, Home Depot, and Lowes.
BUT, one of our "warehouse" stores does what you describe. They move things around the store with the idea that if you have to look for the items you want or need, you will be exposed to more of their store and will end up buying more. Personally, I find it annoying. They seem to think that it gets them more sales.

I hate stores moving things around just to be moving them. A local grocery store is remodeling and with their remodeling you have to go thru a line of people at checkout to get in to shop. This is after done in that part of store. Then it seem like they have made smaller the produce section. Usually went to other stores but once in a while will go there. Usually go to one of 3 others at twice the distance and one of them is owned by same company. This weeks add both have burger for $1.99 but the close one it is 73& other is 80& and close one milk at $1.99 gallon, other at $.99 gallon. The one twice as far away is bigger. And noticing they do not carry same products even owned by same people and only less than 10 mile between stores in both names.

If would have been $1.29 instead of $1.49 each I would not have thought much about it with the others at $.79 for $.50 more for a washer but $.70 or just about double then not having the amount on hand That I think they should carry as most jobs would take more than they have in stock and then wait 3 weeks before they get any more in.

Western Ohio. Favorite is Celina at 30 mile, then Sidney at about 25, then Lima at about 22 mile. Then once in a while I go to Ft Wayne, In. at 80 mile if I have to go there anyway. The Lima store gave my Wife problems after they opened as My Wife worked at Lowes across the street from where Menards built and where Menards would park their building supplys, trucks and other things in Lowes parking lot instead of on their own grounds. My Wife and I would do a lot of shopping at Menards Celina while She was working at Lowes Wapakoneta because of more things wanted and on same items would get a better deal at Menards than even with Her Lowes emploey discount.

Some stores price their goods based on the demographics of the area. In a higher income area, they price things higher, and in a lower income neighborhood, they price things lower. I find it annoying that they take advantage of those who make more.

I needed quite a few machinery bushings awhile back. Went to a family owned hardware store that I knew would have enough and they did. They were priced from .69- 1.49 same size took me some time to get the cheapest ones sorted out.

I always go to Menards when I can, There rebate program while not ideal is far from a ripoff. Granted I would rather just get my money back as a discount at the register but I know I am going to spend my money there any way so why not get 11% off a already low price! Just yesterday I needed 5 bags of sacrete to fix a heaved fence post. Menards was $6.00 a bag, the local Ace hardware $13.00. So going to Menards saved me $35.00 plus another 11%. I don't think I'm getting "fleesed"

I built a $1400 lean to on my shed. Getting $154 back on that purchase was pretty nice - then I got another 16.94 back on that. Considering their prices started out about on par with any other supplier their discount puts them well over the top - that and they are closest to the highway without having to drive through town.

If it was a Mom and Pop store I could see price difference but not on a chain like TSC is that is supposed to be a farm parts supplier while Menards is not a farm parts supplier Same as Lowes that does not carry any of the machinery bushings either. You would think a store like TSC should sell way more of those machinery bushings than Menards so they should be able to cut a better price.

We rehabbed a farmhouse we bought two years ago, and a majority of the stuff came from Menards. And I felt exactly the way you did, but then the carpenter introduced me to the guy in charge at the contractor desk. Frankly, he treated me better than anybody from the lumberyard ever did. If I needed something, he'd get whoever was in charge of that department.

I ended up buying a lot on their stupid rebates... but I used the kitchen cabinet one to put towards windows, windows towards lumber, etc.

It worked well enough I bought a 90 by 175 shed from them last year... and got the rebate. I am still using that up.

I was directly referring to the bushing at 79 cents vs 1.49. Not talking about a 1400 dollar shed or washer and dryer and dishwasher. I ask what would the price difference be on a 79 cent washer and a 1.48 washer by the time you mailed in rebate and went back to spend your savings. Do not read more in to my statement than what was said. I never bad mouthed Menards 11% rebate. It is a real savings even if you have to use the rebate at Menards. gobble

sammydwm I usually am at the Menards in Cedar Rapids or Dubuque.

The flashlight issue was at the Cedar Rapids store. They have the type of rechargeable LED lights I use over with the LED ceiling lights not the row where they keep the flashlights.

The hardware was at the Dubuque store. I need concrete anchor nails. I know they are a "special" use nail but they are still a nail. I could even under stand if they had been with the concrete screw in anchors but they had them over by the bags of concrete/concrete finishing tools.

I find I need to asked for help finding things more at Menards over Home Depot or Lowes. It really gets me when they show having stock but can not find it. I have had that happen twice in the last year at Menards in Cedar Rapids.

Yup, TSC isn't a bargain store. But they are open after 5PM and an weekends. They get a lot of business.

If you'd really wanted to save you should have gone on line to some place like Ebay and paid less than you did and gotten free shipping to your door to boot!
