Stolen pto shaft?

What should I do or am I just out a pto? My son bought me a nice 10x60 transport auger at a consignment sale on Sat. The pto shaft was not there. I picked up the auger yesterday and asked about the pto. They did not have it but gave me the owner who sent it to the sales phone number. I called him to ask about the pto and he says it was on the auger and was zip tied fast when he took it there. The auger is a Hutchinson with a swing away hopper and the missing pto shaft is just a short one but it has a double universal which I know will make it very expensive to replace. My guess is that shaft will cost $4-500. The man who took it to the sale feels like the auction company should replace it as it was there when he took it in. It was already gone when we bought it but nothing was said about a pto shaft. They usually remove the pto's and lock them in a building when something comes. What is your opinions? Tom

Around here you would just be out of luck. I took some stuff to a local consignment auction here several years ago and didn't pick up what didn't sell right after the sale, went to get it the next morning and it was gone. Tough luck, you were supposed to get it after the sale, we don't keep an eye on stuff. I figured the things should have brought about three thousand dollars. Last time I took anything to that auction. Went to another auction and bought a sliding corral panel gate. Auction ended after dark and I figured I would come back in the morning and get my stuff. Somebody stole the gate in the meantime.

Since it was a consignment sale your more than likely out of luck. You should have asked BEFORE buying the auger IF the PTO shaft was there for it. I have learned the hard way on PTO shafts, top links and such. IF it is not there assume it will not sell with one and adjust your price accordingly.

Here auctioneers all state they are not responsible for thief. If the auger didn't have a PTO when you bought it. You bought it that way. You will have to replace it yourself.

I would go to a welding shop. They can make shafts less than half of what OEM will cost you.

Unfortunately there are thieves everywhere. I have had several things stolen after I bought them. I was just out of luck. What the auction company I work for does is remove anything of value and place it in secure bins. A orange tag is placed on the item stating that there are additional components in the bin. The auction listing tells if the PTO shaft is missing. They have cameras everywhere and can look at the footage to catch anyone who "takes something by mistake".

The last sale I went to someone pulled the drawbars out of all the tractors and put them on the table to be sold seperatly. First time I ever saw that

As Kirby Warfield used to say "Son expect the worst and you won't be disappointed"
Did have a deal last year at a consignment sale bought 2 NH balers when I went back to pick up the parts NH 853 the guy handling things handed me a PTO front shaft said it was for the baler.
I told him it didn't fit this baler ,he got pretty smart about it so I said fine and put it on the back of the truck.Never heard anymore but some one had to be out their PTO shaft probably ended up with my baler shaft.

Had a hydraulic cylinder stolen off a drill I bought at an auction. Was sure the guy that bought the plow next to it took it because it didn't have one. Was just out of luck after getting the runaround for a week. It sucks but some folks arent bothered by being thieves.

I traveled around several states last spring looking for a newer feed grinder. Every dealer I went to, the tractor half would be missing. One dealer said his was stolen and the others said they kept them in the shop. I guess its a common problem, especially with the cost of a heavy duty one.
As much as I hate to say I think you will be out of luck in your case, especially being a consignment sale.

at auctions I've learned the hard way to take anything that can be carried, to my truck. Smaller items go into my backpack I always wear to auctions. Also holds water bottles, food, & a chain & lock for larger stuff. Yoder & Frey taught me that in 1980.

At auctions it helps to bring a second or third person to guard purchases until they can be hauled away. Continue to have someone guard the loaded truck or trailer until you leave.

You're out of luck.

Auctioneers have terms and conditions. Usually the major ones like "as is where is" and "auctioneer not responsible for theft" are printed right on your bidder number card, or the card states that the terms and conditions are available at the office. By getting a bidder card you are agreeing to all terms and conditions. They are also stated by the auctioneer at the beginning of the sale.

Agreed. Even if they found it the shaft goes to owner since the son bought it without a shaft and bid on it that way.

your out PERIOD. I USED TO ASSEMBLE new machinery for dealer, when unit was put on lot your never put pto shafts on, hyd hoses, some cases the hyd cylinder and on truck augers your never put tires rims on. what happen to you is daily event at sales, i took a good running old dixon mower in to be sold, day sale would not start, i got call about it, yea it always ran good, told them see if battery was gone, it was okay but they had taken the solenoid shift starter! thats just life at auctions!

At a recent consignment sale the auctioneer said right up front that they were not removing shafts anymore but were leaving them with the item. If the shaft is there, there it is, if not don't assume there is one and you are buying it without it. With their old way you had to go to the office to get it when you check out and hope they could find it. Been delayed many times when they couldn't locate the shaft. At least they said when it sold that it had a PTO shaft or it didn't.

Sorry for your loss.
