Case 970 Hydraulics Tune Up

I've been using my grandfather's Case 970 for my hay production for the passed few years. It operates nicely but has leaks and transmission temps overheat after a short amount of work. I plan to tear it down and replace oil and seals. Any information on things to check/replace or things to test ahead of time would be greatly appreciated. Also any information on the tractor in general. It's got the diesel with power shift trans and currently sitting at 1160 hours.
Thanks![/b]

Are you sure the oil cooler in front of the radiator is clean? That trans should not overheat putting
up hay unless your baler is a huge 4x4 square baler. Is the fluid in the trans at the proper level?

Fluid level is good. I've tried cleaning the rad best I can with compressed air. When it's under repair I plan to remove it and clean inside and out.

Heatingof the hyd fluid can be a couple things, the cooler has been brought up already and yes first thing to check,, also a stuck pilot valve in the powershift valve will do it and do damage in the transmission, the other much over looked is the 3pt hitch linkage being out of adjustment and it will not cancel the raise cycle of the 3pt making the oil by-pass and will heat it pretty quickly

A Case 970 does not have a hydraulic oil cooler up front of the radiator. Tranny holds 15 gal. of oil and it does the cooling. As bro said, I would check to see if 3pt is canceling.

ACG and Case Nutty 1660 , The 770 Power shift that I have came without a oil cooler when it was new. I remember when the trans went out on this tractor. I was raking hay
and it was an up hill grade, all of a sudden the tractor was rolling backwards. The trans was gone and luckily it was still under warranty. the tractor was about nine
months old. When it came back from the dealer there was an oil cooler on the tractor. Never had that problem again. So there could be some 770 tractors still without an
oil cooler. They obviously weren't designed with a cooler in mind.

Raking hay would never have caused it to get hot enough to damage the trans with or without a cooler you had something else go wrong and cause your issue,, I will have to look over some early lit,, like 3pt remotes pto all were options I have seen and worked on hundreds of them here never seen one without a cooler,, but I know some dealers and people wanted to save every dime they could when buying new so I could see dealers order them without one, like 3pt we only sold one 30 series without it and we had to special order it in for the man, same way with 580 backhoes, every 580 we sold new from 580CK starting in 1966 through the 580C the last 580 model we sold before the dealership was sold had a dsl engine and powershuttle, and front counter weights, we had dealers from other places get a couple bids from us as they sold them a dry clutch 580 with nothing but bare bones equipment on them,, one even sold them a 580C with only ROPS when the bid clearly said a cabed unit,, I guess I find it odd they would even order one without the cooler as to me it was just something you always speced them with, we always tried to think ahead for some job they were going to use them for they had not thought of yet

My 970 has an oil cooler. It reads hot but have never really noticed any changes in the tractor when it does. The 3 pt hitch functions properly and doesn't seem to sound laboured in any position. I should mention that the first season I used it I had a problem with the fluid foaming. At the end of the season I changed the seals on the pump and no more foam.

Before you jump in head first tearing things apart, have you verified the fluid temperature with a thermometer.

A faulty sending unit could be misleading your diagnosis.

I built a 1070 out of 2 this spring, the gauge was reading all over the place with the sensor from the first tractor, swapped it out and all was well.

I will add have you changed the hyd filters as they too can cause heating,, also how hot is hot? does it peg the gauge? might be a bare wire grounding it out or even a bad or incorrect sending unit just a few more suggestions

Funny you say that. I just finished working it so the temp gauge was maxed. I blew the rad and oil cooler out with compressed air and realized that the oil cooler was not really hot to the touch at all. Checked the lines, filter canisters, trans body, and some controls and none felt overly hot. Thinking a better temp check is in order. The gauge is a little screwy, it won't register until the temp reaches a certain point, the needle just bounces with the movement of the tractor. Once it gets to the yellow it will stay up there but it usually requires a good bump or a hit on the gauge to get it there.

Do not know how my Father ordered it. Tractor was our main unit at that time so could of been anything going on with it.Dealer put it on at no charge by Case.
