466e in my truck

engine in my truck went down Sunday started rattleing and then puffing black . the shop it's at now says it looks like a spit injector or injectors and has to pull the head . does this make sense ? injectors are a grand apiece and pulling the head is also . are 466e engines junk and should I look for another truck ? it's a nice truck and given no problems over the last 5yrs even though I've only driven it 10k over these years . what's the talk on these engines . I would appreciate any info .

You don't have to pull the head to get the injectors out!!! Don't let them tell you any different. Even if part of a tip came off when it split, that normally goes on out of the engine when it happens. I've got the tool to R&R the injector cups in the head ON the engine, a little pesky getting to the back two. A lot of timmes, the cup cracks and lets coolant leak once the injector is out. I use a handheld laser gun to check exhaust manifold temps and find the bad injector.

Forgot to add, the DT466E is one of, if not the best electronic engines of its time. If it's built before 2003 or so, you got one of the good ones. Changes were made in later 2000's such as EGR, etc, that made it more difficult/expensive to work on. You need to find a shop that has a good reputation on the older equipment, maybe they won't burn you.

Hello dblair,

That engine is the one of the top ten best engines ever made!, injectors are removed with the head on.
It sounds a little pricey, NO way they cost that much!

Hello dblair,

OOOPS! Did not see the E. Some, like the E ones are more pricey.Still, a far cry from the price you were quoted!

went to ebay and saw international dt466e b1 diesel fuel injector for 199 remanufatured from a Michgan company . would that be the right one ? is the b1 on or of road .

dblair, These guys are taking you for a ride. We work on a lot of DT466E's. We just did one a few weeks back. 6 reman injectors from International. A new valve cover gasket and labor was $2750.00. We just overhauled two,one had close to 300,000 miles on it that ran every day. A DT466 is the best Medium duty engine out there,as far as I am concerned.

I just found Alliant NEW injectors for 318 and change. Found rebuilt units from 100 to 230. I will call my dealer today and ask him what he charges for them.

yes I figured that , but they are what we have in the Richmond area , if that doesn't make you sick . tell me another this way that's better and I'll go . I know a lot of great diesel mechanics but none do the electronic ones .

thanks guys for all your input . you confirmed what I thought about dealers in today's market . I see all those big dump trucks they move and I hope they give those people a better deal than they a proposing to me . well I took it there on a trailer just have to bring it back on one .

How much of that estimate is for the parts and how much is labor (shop rate X hours)?

they took the head of and I looked at it . It had a cracked piston on no.1 , the tip of the injector had cracked and took a plunge into no.2 beat the piston and damaged a valve seat . no.6 injector had been leaking and had sludge associated in no.6 . so much for the 466e not a great engine with only 160k . the turbo also had a lot of play in the shaft . that's the scoop , the truck ran good and pulled good for a 190 hp engine up to it's last gasp . thanks for helping , it's undetermined as of yet about it's future .

That doesn't mean it's a bad engine. It means it had a bad injector that took care of the engine for you. The Duramaxes were known to do that when they were new, but not all of them did it. Heui injectors need clean, well maintained oil and filters.

Ask your dealer what he thinks caused the failure. They have the most experience, along with factory backing when they do warranty work and determine failure causes.Even tho this is not warranty, they should tell you a cause.I worked on those engines, and trucks, for years and don't recall any failing-only an injector now and then, and those were only for a miss.Of all the brand engines out there,it was probably the best, and C7 Cats were the worst.Mark
