Chevy pickup, no trailer brakes

I bought a 2002 Chevy 2500HD 4x4 pickup and then bought a 27' gooseneck trailer to haul my tractors. I had no brake lights or brakes on the trailer. I replaced the plug in on the truck and now I have all the lights working, but no power to the brakes. I put my test light ground on the ground terminal of the plug, have my wife push the button on the controller, the light on the controller comes on but I get no power at the plug in. What or where do I check next?? Thanks, Chris

if it is a factory installed controller there should be a fuse/relay somewhere. Maybe under the hood

Have you checked all your fuses? I have exactly the same truck as yours but an '03 (I expect it to be the same as an '02), the fuse box where your trailer harness is plugged in is to the left of your feet under the dash. On mine there's also a little fuse panel you access when the driver's door is open and the big one under the hood of course. If you have a tester with a sharp end you can poke through the insulation of the wire with current from the controller... try and follow the wire all the way to the back to find where the current is gone... not always an easy task. If it's not a fuse it will be a poor connection somewhere.

which trailer plug? if 6 pin round there are 2 standards for wiring diagram. don't ask me how I know as one puts 12 volts to brakes instead of charging break away battery. didn't have enough power to move trailer. I have been told some of the large round flat 7 terminal plugs may be the same, different between camper hookup and cargo trailer wiring but can not say this is so as I have not researched it.

Agree with Leroy, I have seen 2 different wiring configurations on both plugs, one commonly used on campers, and another commonly used on goose necks. See if this site helps

Under the hood, on top of the inner fender on the driver's side there is a square cover with rounded edges. That cover is over a fuse/relay panel. I would check the fuses there first. The plug at the rear, Is it the RV type or the smaller round pin plug? The RV plugs seem to all be wired the same. The smaller one with the round pins are wired 2 different ways.

I had the same problem with my 07 Chev HD. It was a blown fuse under the hood like Tim stated in his post. I found out it has separate fuses in the under the hood box for the trailer plug. Mine was factory installed.

chris, did you install the controller? on my 06 w/t there was an accessorie harness i had to install under the dash for the controller. then under the hood, there is a large wire harness coming up below the master cylinder that branches off to the rear of the truck. there should be a blue wire, prolly 12 gauge, that is the power supply to the rear of the truck to activate the brakes. mine was not hooked up from the factory, the wire was terminated at the end of the harness near the under hood fuse box. you may need to extend that blue wire to the power output of the brake controller unit. see if the blue wire is there, and then check there for power when the controller is activated. if you have power there, there must be a break in the wire somewhere under the truck.

This is just my experience. I had an 01 1500 that I hauled a 10 foot trailer with with lights and brakes. When I switched to an 08 1500 I transferred the controller. Nothing worked. I had to trade 2 wires on the trailer side of the connection. I cant remember what ones but the diagram of the plugs will show what 2 wires need to be switched.
