o.t. soil PH

was planning on sowing alfalfa this month but my soil samples showed a PH of 5.9, I decided to scrub the alfalfa for timothy and orchard grass and also ordered a load of lime to spread. any other means to sweeten the soil? my sample also indicated I needed 65lb/acre p205 and 160lb/acre k20 however this was for alfalfa. what should I use for the grass? this is my first attempt using soil samples want to get it right this time.

Well, you could have the lab redo the reccomendation for grass, they will likely do that free. But odds are, it won't be a lot different. A forage crop will remove a lot of P and K.

And with the grass, you will need a substantial amount of N fertilizer as well, up to 100 pounds per acre. Ben

Your P and K numbers are not that far out of line for a normal maintenance level for Alfalfa. Your PH is low but I have seem much worse still grow alfalfa. The biggest issue is where are you located? The further north the harder it is to fall seed alfalfa successfully.

I will second Connie minnie in that if you switch to grass you should add N to the ration. Truthfully I add it to alfalfa hay on a new seeding too. The alfalfa will produce N but that it after the stand is established. Until then it needs it to be in the soil.

You can use wood ash if you have biomass elec. generating plants within fifty or so miles. It is usually available for the cost of trucking. In addition to the lime equivalent you also get K.
