All electric cars?

All electric cars, not hybrids, don't burn gasoline.

So what do you call the peddle you push on to make the car move? It can't be a gas peddle, the car doesn't use gas.

Or throttle pedal, or fuel pedal ? I guess that would be correct also for a diesel. I often call it a gas pedal on my diesel truck especially if my wife or daughter is helping me with something. Gas pedal is easier understood than "fuel or throttle."

I remember the deceleration peddle on the neighbor's 1948? Case VAC. Very handy when turning around at the end of the "land" or corn plowing. Leo

Jim has it right, though it's kind of a long word to use when you say you 'mashed the potentiometer to get out of the way of traffic'.

My daughter got a computer science degree from a major university and graduated 15 months ago. She managed to get a six-figure salary right out of school and does computer programming as her occupation. (She's female, so it fills the quota and she's VERY good at her job) Since she was mostly on scholarships, she spent very little on her schooling and now has money to spend. While I didn't agree with this decision, she also dropped $1K to be put on a waiting list for the new Tesla that will be coming out in a couple of years. (Did I say I didn't agree with that decision?)
ANYWAY, we were talking a few months ago and she was very much in favor of the self-driving car. She couldn't wait for it. While I'm sure they have some advantages, I'm the type of guy who could be called a Doubting Thomas.
So I asked her: "You are very familiar with viruses, correct?"
Her: "Of course. I see them all the time."
Me: "So what happens when somebody puts a virus in the self-driving car's automated program and all cars are programmed to turn left at the same time?"
Her: Dead silence.....
I never did her an answer from her.

Why do you think electric cars are coal powered with only about 1/3 of electricity generated using coal ??

My son got to purchase a Tesla Model X P90D w/Ludicrous Mode for his project at work. (Yes...LM is a real thing) He recently used the auto driving on a short road trip from Michigan to Illinois. They were more concerned about having all the charging stations mapped out beforehand. Never did get a chance to ask him how it went but they made it back and he's still alive so I guess that's something.

On my Lionel electric train the lever was on the transformer and it was just marked High and Low. lol

Actually I was watching a car TV channel this morning and the maker of a total electric car, the CODA, said all you have do is step on the gas peddle and it goes. I thought that was funny, a total electric car with a gas peddle. So I posted the question.

BYW I never heard of the CODA car have you?
geo
Coda car.

Gamble,
I think I heard on TV that Tesla is making a cheaper low end total electric car for the masses. Is that true or do I have a bad memory?

George I totally agree with you on this. However my wife insist we both have Asperger as is my diagnosis from doctors.

Pretty sure it's called the model 3. I've also heard that 500,000 people have put $1,000 down to be put on the list. So if Tesla does go out of business, 500,000 people will have lost $1,000. There are other electric cars out there, but I guess since she's a millennial, it's the Tesla that's cool, not an electric Ford or electric Chevy, that's already in production, BTW. If she does get this car, guess who will have to go to her residence and wire up the charging station? (Me) She also likes to get out of the city on weekends. If her car is stranded somewhere, who will she call? (Me) She lives a good hour away from me, so if she runs out of electrical charge on the way to my house or on the way back to her residence, who will she call? (Me)
Don't get me wrong, I am proud of her. And I have no problem with an all electric car, at least in the city.
Okay, I'm off my soap box now.

Nobody ever heard of a Tesla until Elon Musk decided to go into the car business.
Back at the turn of the last century, around 1901 to 1905, many cars of that era were electric. There were also a few steam powered cars. Each had good points as well as bad points.
The whole idea of an electric car has to overcome the problem of battery technology. To this day, we have not improved much over the batteries that they used in a 1901 Studebaker.

The problems that need to be solved are operating range, charging times, and battery life. Unless there is a major breakthrough in battery technology, electric cars will remain basically a novelty plaything- and in the case of a Tesla, a very expensive plaything. For long distance travel and operating range, you still have a long way to go to beat the internal combustion engine.

Well said. SIL works for Rockwell, electrical engineer. Current project require X hours of battery life. Using the most up to date battery technology they were getting 6 hours only by minimizing what the item is drawing. They have been working on it for over a year.

If what you say is true then Tesla is sitting on 500,000,000 dollars (yes that's a half a Billion) of other people's money. I should hope they have enough cash to stay in business for a few more months anyway. And a 100,000+ dollar electric supercar is but a plaything for those who drive 300,000 dollar cars for their daily driver. (not me, I worry about the last tractor I paid 450 bucks for and wonder if I gave too much) Comparing a Chevy Volt to a Tesla is like comparing an 8N Ford to a new Fendt tractor.

The Chevy Volt is not all electric, it is basically a Hybrid! The Chevy Bolt is the all electric car that Chevy has!

Didn't you answer your own question?

I guess so. You guys were talking apples and I mentioned oranges. A model X P90D is about $115,000 plus or minus $30,000 depending on year model and options. A Model 3 is a whole different animal. I guess I wasn't following the conversation close enough.

ecause all the nat gas, solar, wind, hydro, and nuke power is used for other purposes and only coal power is used to charge electric cars!
